چکیده

We discuss the possibilities and limitations of a scalable video codec based on JPEG2000. We give a review of wavelet-based motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) and discuss how JPEG2000 components can be used for coding temporal subbands and motion data. At the example of a simple implementation that uses as many ingredients from JPEG2000 as possible, we discuss some issues in coding transform coefficients resulting from MCTF. We also discuss to what extent JPEG2000 can be used to encode motion vector data in a lossless way. Finally, we present some compression results that can be achieved by putting the simple ingredients together, and compare them to MPEG-2 and MC-ECBZ, a “proper” wavelet-based scalable video codec.

H.264-Based Resolution, SNR and Temporal Scalable Video Transmission Systems

This paper presents a novel H.264-based video coding scheme for a scalable delivery system which operates over heterogeneous networks and distributes real-time streaming video to diverse types of clients. The video coding scheme is a hybrid combination of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and H.264. In the algorithm, an input video sequence is first decomposed into a fundamental sequence and a n...

Subband Adaptive Motion Compensated Temporal Filtering for Scalable Video Coding

This paper proposes a subband adaptive motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) technique for scalable video coding. In scalable video coding schemes, hierarchical MCTF is widely adopted to exploit the temporal correlation across frames, for its good performance in energy compaction and its ability in providing efficient SNR scalability. In this hierarchical MCTF structure, the temporal cor...

In-band motion compensated temporal filtering

A novel framework for fully scalable video coding that performs open-loop motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) in the wavelet domain (in-band) is presented in this paper. Unlike the conventional spatial-domain MCTF (SDMCTF) schemes, which apply MCTF on the original image data and then encode the residuals using the critically sampled discrete wavelet transform (DWT), the proposed framew...

Multiple description scalable coding using wavelet-based motion compensated temporal filtering

Packet delay jitter and loss due to network congestion pose significant challenges for designing and deploying delay sensitive multimedia applications over the best effort packet switched networks such as the Internet. Recent studies indicate that using Multiple Description Coding (MDC) in conjunction with path or server diversity can mitigate these effects. However, the proposed MDC coding and...

Performance Comparison between DWT-based and DCT-based Encoders

The scalable extension to the H.264/AVC has been established as a Scalable Video Coding (SVC) standard, and JPEG2000 is a state of the act still image coding standard. SVC is based on the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and JPEG2000 is based on Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). Despite the DWT has been successfully employed in still image coding, the latest video coding standard keeps on ultili...
