Carbohydrates in Equine Nutrition
نویسنده
چکیده
Structural carbohydrates are those that are resistant to the horse’s digestive enzymes. These carbohydrates occur in the cell wall portion of the plant and they must be fermented by bacteria living in the horse’s gut before they can be utilized by the horse. As a group, these carbohydrates are called plant fiber and they consist primarily of cellulose and hemicellulose. The various types of non-structural carbohydrates that appear in horse feed are summarized in table 1. Only these types of carbohydrates will be considered in depth in this paper.

Involvement of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) carbohydrate side chains in its bioactivity; lessons from recombinant hormone expressed in insect cells.
Natural eCG consists of as much as 45% carbohydrate side chains. The present paper deals with the analysis of the roles of the N- and O-linked saccharides of this hormone in the different steps of its activity and its possible replacement by recombinant eCG expressed in baculovirus-insect cell systems.
متن کاملAlterations in microbiota and fermentation products in equine large intestine in response to dietary variation and intestinal disease.
We aimed to determine the effects of variations in dietary composition on equine gut microbiota and their fermentation products, and proposed that dietary modifications profoundly affect microbial ecosystems and their metabolites. Bacterial communities within the large intestine of three groups of horses were compared using oligonucleotide-RNA hybridisation methodology. Each group consisting of...
متن کاملInvestigation of Allergic Skin Disease in the Horse
In human and veterinary medicine IDT remains the “gold-standard” for diagnosing allergic skin disease although SAT is popular because of its convenience. Many laboratories will test a single equine serum sample against a panel of common equine allergens. However, in one study of three commonly used equine SAT’s, all tests had poor sensitivity and poor positive predictive value when compared to ...

متن کاملLow-digestible carbohydrates: the regulatory framework.
Legislation is described that impacts on the use of low-digestible carbohydrates in foods. This includes controls on the use of these carbohydrates, mandatory labeling concerned with gastrointestinal effects, nutrition labeling, and nutrition and other claims. Regional differences in approach to legislation have led to inconsistencies in the information that must be provided to consumers, even ...
