ness of linguistic form may influence self-perceived attitudes in at least two ways. Thus far we have advocated a self-perception process in which people (mis)attribute their use of essentialist linguistic formulations to the centrality of the relevant preference to their identity. A second mechanism is also possible in which the use of more or less abstract linguistic formulations influences the nature of attitude-relevant information available to people as they evaluate their attitudes. The use of abstract linguistic formulations may, for example, make perceptions and memories that are consistent with strong versions of one’s attitudes more available (see Hardin & Banaji, 1993) or increase the likelihood that people will make schema-consistent inferences (see Hoffman, Lau, & Johnson, 1986). These processes are likely to be complementary rather than antagonistic and may operate separately or in tandem to produce the observed effects.5
