Hotelling-downs Model of Electoral Competition and the Option to Quit
نویسنده
چکیده
We study a variant of the multi-candidate Hotelling-Downs model that recognizes that politicians, even after declaring candidacy, have the option of withdrawing before the election date. We find that this natural variation dramatically alters equilibrium predictions. Under a mild parametric restriction, an equilibrium always exists for an arbitrary finite number of candidates. Moreover, under some further restriction, every equilibrium must involve policy divergence. Probabilistic Voting in Models of Electoral Competition
The pioneering model of electoral competition was developed by Harold Hotelling and Anthony Downs. The model developed by Hotelling and Downs and many subsequent models in the literature about electoral competition have assumed that candidates embody policies and, if a voter is not indifferent between the policies embodied by two candidates, then the voter’s choices are fully determined by his ...
متن کاملParty Platforms in Electoral Competition with Many Constituencies
This paper shows how political parties differentiate to reduce electoral competition. Two parties choose platforms in a unidimensional policy space, and then in a continuum of constituencies with different median voters candidates from the two parties compete in Hotelling-Downs competition. Departing from party platform is costly enough that candidates do not take the median voter’s preferred p...
متن کاملSignaling Character in Electoral Competition
We study a one-dimensional Hotelling-Downs model of electoral competition with the following innovation: a fraction of candidates have “character” and are exogenously committed to a campaign platform; this is unobservable to voters. Character is desirable, and a voter’s utility is a convex combination of standard policy preferences and her assessment of a candidate’s character. This structure i...
متن کاملVariations on the Hotelling-Downs Model
In this paper we expand the standard Hotelling-Downs model (Hotelling 1929; Downs 1957) of spatial competition to a setting where clients do not necessarily choose their closest candidate (retail product or political). Specifically, we consider a setting where clients may disavow all candidates if there is no candidate that is sufficiently close to the client preferences. Moreover, if there are...
متن کاملStrategic dissent in the Hotelling-Downs model with sequential entry and private information
We analyze the Hotelling-Downs model of winner-take-all elections with sequential entry where ≥ 2 ‘office-seeking’ candidates with privately known qualities choose entry decisions and commit to policy platforms on entering. Voters receive informative public signals about the quality of each contestant once all platforms are announced. We first characterize two-party equilibria when the order ...
