Fast retrieval of similar configurations

چکیده
Configuration similarity is a special form of content-based image retrieval that considers relative object locations. It can be used as a standalone method, or to complement retrieval based on visual or semantic features. The corresponding queries ask for sets of objects that satisfy some spatio-temporal constraints, e.g., “find all triplets of objects ( 1, 2, 3), such that 1 is northeast of 2, which is inside 3.” Exhaustive processing (i.e., retrieval of the best solutions) of configuration similarity queries, in general, has exponential complexity and fast search for sub-optimal solutions is the only way to deal with the vast amounts of multimedia information in several real-time applications. In this paper we first discuss the utilization of nonsystematic search heuristics, based on genetic algorithms, simulated annealing and hill climbing approaches. An extensive experimentation with real and synthetic datasets reveals that hill climbing techniques are the best for the current problem; therefore, as a subsequent step we study the search space, and develop improved variations of hill climbing that take advantage of the special structure of the problem to enhance speed. The proposed heuristic methods significantly outperform systematic search when there is only limited time for query processing.

A Vote-and-Verify Strategy for Fast Spatial Verification in Image Retrieval
Spatial verification is a crucial part of every image retrieval system, as it accounts for the fact that geometric feature configurations are typically ignored by the Bag-of-Words representation. Since spatial verification quickly becomes the bottleneck of the retrieval process, runtime efficiency is extremely important. At the same time, spatial verification should be able to reliably distingu...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Interaction between the Formal Types of Traditional Houses and Spatial Configurations using Space Syntax Case Study: Traditional Houses of Kashan
Kashan is a city in Iran with a host of traditional houses that date to the Qajar period. Sociocultural and climatic factors have had the greatest impact on their spatial configurations. In this study, focusing on entrances, the spatial configuration of houses in Kashan is analyzed. Houses are first categorized in terms of physical form in four categories: single-courtyard houses with massing ...

Nowadays, with huge progress in digital imaging, new image processing methods are needed to manage digital images stored on disks. Image retrieval has been one of the most challengeable fields in digital image processing which means searching in a big database in order to represent similar images to the query image. Although many efficient researches have been performed for this topic so far, t...
متن کاملProblems related to combinatorial configurations with applications to P2P-user private information retrieval
We explain the applications that combinatorial configurations have to peer-to-peer user-private information retrieval and we analyze some problems that arise from these applications. In particular we deal with the existence of combinatorial configurations, the characterization of optimal configurations for peer-to-peer user-private information retrieval and the existence of configurations preve...
