چکیده

Most X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Swift satellite have a shallow decay phase ∝ t in the first thousands of seconds. We discuss that the shallow decay requires an unreasonably high gamma-ray efficiency, & 75–90%, within current models, which is difficult to be produced by internal shocks. Such a crisis may be avoided if a weak relativistic explosion occurs ∼ 10–10 s prior to the main burst or if the energy fraction that goes into electrons increases during the shallow decay, ǫe ∝ t . The former model predicts a very long precursor while either model would prefer dim optical flashes from the reverse shock as recently reported. Shallow Decay of Early X-ray Afterglows from Inhomogeneous Gamma-ray Burst Jets

Almost all the X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Swift satellite have a shallow decay phase in the first thousands of seconds. We show that in an inhomogeneous jet (multiple-subjet or patchy-shell) model the superposition of the afterglows of off-axis subjets (patchy shells) can have the shallow decay phase. The necessary condition for obtaining the shallow decay phase...

The interpretation of the Swift GRB X-ray afterglows

— We discuss the current interpretations of the Swift GRB X-ray afterglows, mainly focusing on the sharp decline at the prompt tail emission, and the shallow decay afterward, which is then followed by the conventional pre-Swift decay behavior, and the possible X-ray flares during the latter two stages. We emphasize the role of the central engine in interpreting the GRB afterglows. PACS 98.70.Rz...

On the “canonical behaviour” of the X-ray afterglows of the Gamma Ray Bursts observed with Swift’s XRT

The “canonical behaviour” of the early X-ray afterglows of long-duration Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) —observed by the X-Ray Telescope of the SWIFT satellite— is precisely the one predicted by the Cannonball model of GRBs.

THE DISCOVERY OF THE OPTICAL AND NEAR-IR AFTERGLOWS OF THE FIRST Swift GAMMA-RAY BURSTS

We present optical and near-infrared searches for afterglow emission from the first four Swift bursts with accurate positions from the X-ray Telescope (XRT). Using telescopes at Las Campanas, Keck, and Palomar observatories we rapidly identified and followed up afterglows for three of the four bursts. The burst positions were also observed with the Very Large Array, but no radio afterglow emiss...

Evidence for an anticorrelation between the duration of the shallow decay phase of GRB X-ray afterglows and redshift

Context. One of the most intriguing features discovered by Swift is a plateau phase in the X-ray flux decay of about 70% of the afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The physical origin of this feature is still being debated. Aims. We constrain the proposed interpretations, based on the intrinsic temporal properties of the plateau phase. Methods. We selected and analyzed all the Swift/XRT GRB ...
