Contagious yawning: developmental and comparative perspectives

چکیده
Contagious yawning (i.e., yawning triggered by perceiving others’ yawning) is a well-documented phenomenon, but the mechanism underlying it is still unclear. In this chapter, I review the current evidence about (a) developmental studies with typically and atypically developing population and (b) comparative studies in non-human animals. Developmental studies have revealed that contagious yawning is disturbed in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, suggesting that contagious yawning may share a developmental basis with the capacity for theory of mind. Comparative studies have suggested that contagious yawning can be observed in non-primate species such as domestic dogs. As dogs are known to have exceptional skills in communicating with humans, it has also been suggested that contagious yawning may be related to the capacity for social communication. These results from developmental and comparative studies are consistent with the claim that the mechanism underlying contagious yawning relates to the capacity for empathy. Introduction Contagious yawning (i.e., yawning triggered by perceiving others’ yawning) is a well-documented phenomenon. Previous studies have consistently reported that, in a naturalistic or controlled experimental context, 45-60 % of human adults yawn when they observe, hear or imagine others’ yawning . It is not due to common environmental factors between two yawners such as temperature, lighting or the lack of oxygen, because pre-recorded yawning video clips and sounds can also induce contagious yawning . Recently, this phenomenon has been widely sought after in the field of developmental and comparative cognitive sciences. Apart from the intrinsic interest in this well-known but puzzling phenomenon, this is mainly because it is apparently empathetic: the observation of the emotional or physiological status of

Chimpanzees Show a Developmental Increase in Susceptibility to Contagious Yawning: A Test of the Effect of Ontogeny and Emotional Closeness on Yawn Contagion
Contagious yawning has been reported for humans, dogs and several non-human primate species, and associated with empathy in humans and other primates. Still, the function, development and underlying mechanisms of contagious yawning remain unclear. Humans and dogs show a developmental increase in susceptibility to yawn contagion, with children showing an increase around the age of four, when als...
متن کاملContagious yawning: a reflection of empathy, mimicry, or contagion?
Yawning is a curious behavioural phenomenon that at times may be described as ‘contagious’, appearing to spread from one individual to another. Contagious yawning is seen in several primate species, including humans (Provine 1986; Baenninger 1997; Campbell et al. 2009; Palagi et al. 2009). Here we argue that contagious yawning, particularly the newly documented phenomenon of cross-species conta...
متن کاملContagious yawning in autistic and typical development.
The authors tested susceptibility to contagious yawning in 120 children, 1-6 years, to identify the time course of its emergence during development. Results indicated a substantial increase in the frequency of contagious yawning at 4 years. In a second study, the authors examined contagious yawning in 28 children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), 6-15 years. Children with ASD showed diminis...
متن کاملThere is no difference in contagious yawning between men and women
Norscia et al. [1] recently reported the first evidence for a sex bias in contagious yawning among humans. Based on previous research showing an indirect connection between contagious yawning and empathy (e.g. [2–4], but see [5,6]) and that levels of empathy appear to be higher in women compared with men (e.g. [7–9]), the authors investigated whether there is also a sex difference in the expres...
متن کاملYawning Detection Sensitivity and Yawning Contagion
Contagious yawning-the urge to yawn when thinking about, listening to, or viewing yawning-is a well-documented phenomenon in humans and animals. The reduced yawn contagion observed in the autistic population suggested that it might be empathy related; however, it is unknown whether such a connection applies to nonclinical populations. We examined influences from both empathy (i.e., autistic tra...
