X - and Gamma - Ray Line Emission Processes
نویسنده
چکیده
This chapter is intended to provide a general presentation of the atomic and nuclear processes responsible for X-ray line and gamma-ray line emission in various astrophysical environments. I consider line production from hot plasmas, from accelerated particle interactions , from the decay of radioactive nuclei synthesized in stars and from positron annihilation. Spectroscopic properties of these emissions are discussed in the light of the detection capabilities of modern space instruments.

Line emission from gamma-ray burst environments
The time and angle dependent line and continuum emission from a dense torus around a cosmological gamma-ray burst source is simulated, taking into account photoionization, collisional ionization, recombination, and electron heating and cooling due to various processes. The importance of the hydrodynamical interaction between the torus and the expanding blast wave is stressed. Due to the rapid d...
متن کاملX-Rays from Accelerated Ion Interactions
We have developed in detail the theory of X-ray line and continuum production due to atomic interactions of accelerated ions, incorporating in our calculations information from a broad range of laboratory measurements. We applied our calculations to the Orion region from which nuclear gamma-ray lines were observed with the COMPTEL instrument on CGRO. The accelerated particles which produce this...
متن کاملDelayed X- and Gamma-Ray Line Emission from Solar Flare Radioactivity
We have studied the radioactive line emission expected from solar active regions after large flares, following the production of long-lived radioisotopes by nuclear interactions of flare-accelerated ions. This delayed Xand gamma-ray line emission can provide unique information on the accelerated particle composition and energy spectrum, as well as on mixing processes in the solar atmosphere. To...
متن کاملIron Kα Emission from X-ray Reflection: Predictions for Gamma-Ray Burst Models
Recent observations of several γ-ray burst (GRB) afterglows have shown evidence for a large amount of X-ray line emitting material, possibly arising from ionized iron. A significant detection of an X-ray spectral feature, such as that found in the Chandra observation of GRB 991216, may provide important constraints on the immediate environment of the burst and hence on progenitor models. The la...
متن کاملSoft X-ray Emission Lines in the Early Afterglow of Gamma-ray Bursts
We compute the luminosity of Kα emission lines produced by astrophysically abundant elements in the soft X-ray spectra of the early afterglow of gamma-ray bursts. We find that the detection of these lines can be a diagnostic for the geometrical set-up of the reprocessing material. In particular we can distinguish between a “geometry dominated” model, in which the line emission is coming from an...
