cm opacity fluctuations power spectra towards Cassiopeia A

چکیده
The angular power spectrum of H I 21 cm opacity fluctuations is a useful statistic for quantifying the observed opacity fluctuations as well as for comparing these with theoretical models. We present here the H I 21 cm opacity fluctuation power spectrum towards the supernova remnant Cas A from interferometric data with spacial resolution of 5 arcsec and spectral resolution of 0.4 km s−1. The power spectrum has been estimated using a simple but robust visibility-based technique. We find that the power spectrum is well fitted by a power law P τ (U ) = U with a power-law index of α ∼ −2.86 ± 0.10 (3σ error) over the scales of 0.07–2.3 pc for the gas in the Perseus spiral arm and 0.002–0.07 pc (480–15 730 au) for that in the local arm. This estimated power-law index is consistent with earlier observational results based on both H I emission over larger scales and absorption studies over a similar range of scales. We do not detect any statistically significant change in the power-law index with the velocity width of the frequency channels. This constrains the power-law index of the velocity structure function to be β = 0.2 ± 0.6 (3σ error).

Power Spectrum of the density of cold atomic gas in the Galaxy towards Cas A and Cygnus A
We have obtained the power spectral description of the density and opacity fluctuations of the cold HI gas in the Galaxy towards Cas A, and Cygnus A. We have employed a method of deconvolution, based on CLEAN, to estimate the true power spectrum of optical depth of cold HI gas from the observed distribution, taking into account the finite extent of the background source and the incomplete sampl...
متن کاملThe effects of Lyman-limit systems on the evolution and observability of the epoch of reionization
We present the first large-scale, full radiative transfer simulations of the reionization of the intergalactic medium in the presence of Lyman-limit systems (LLSs). To illustrate the impact of LLS opacity, possibly missed by previous simulations, we add either a uniform or spatially varying hydrogen bound–free opacity. This opacity, implemented as the mean free path (MFP) of the ionizing photon...
متن کاملNear-Infrared Spectroscopy of the Cassiopeia A and Kepler Supernova Remnants
Near-infrared spectra (0.95 – 2.4 μm) of the Cassiopeia A and Kepler supernova remnants (SNRs) are presented. Low-dispersion (R ≈ 700) spectra were obtained for five bright fast-moving ejecta knots (FMKs) at two locations on the main shell and for three bright circumstellar knots (QSFs) near the southwest rim of Cas A. The main shell FMKs in Cas A exhibit a sparse nearinfrared spectrum dominate...
متن کاملDetection of the 67.9 Kev and 78.4 Kev Lines Associated with the Radio-active Decay of Ti in Cassiopeia A
We report the detection of the Sc nuclear decay lines at 67.9 keV and 78.4 keV associated with the nuclear decay of Ti in Cassiopeia A. The line emission was observed by the PDS instrument on board BeppoSAX, which recently observed the supernova remnant for over 500 ks. The detection of the line emission with a flux of (2.1± 0.7) 10 ph/cm/s in each line (90% confidence) is at the 5σ significanc...
متن کاملFast Variability of Nonthermal X-ray Emission in Cassiopeia A: Probing Electron Acceleration in Reverse-shocked Ejecta
Recent discovery of the year-scale variability in the synchrotron X-ray emission of the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7−3946 has initiated our study of multi-epoch X-ray images and spectra of the young SNR Cassiopeia A based on the Chandra archive data taken in 2000, 2002, and 2004. We have found year-scale time variations in the X-ray intensity for a number of X-ray filaments or knots assoc...
