A Library of Parameterizable Floating-Point Cores for FPGAs and Their Application to Scientific Computing

چکیده
Advances in field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), which are the platform of choice for reconfigurable computing, have made it possible to use FPGAs in increasingly many areas of computing, including complex scientific applications. These applications demand high performance and high-precision, floating-point arithmetic. Until now, most of the research has not focussed on compliance with IEEE standard 754, focusing instead upon custom formats and bitwidths. In this paper, we present double-precision floating-point cores that are parameterized by their degree of pipelining and the features of IEEE standard 754 that they implement. We then analyze the effects of supporting the standard when these cores are used in an FPGA-based accelerator for Lennard-Jones force and potential calculations that are part of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

FPGA Paranoia: Testing Numerical Properties of FPGA Floating Point IP-Cores
In the early days of computing, hardware platforms were developed independently and created their own conventions for floating point to suit their underlying hardware architecture, but this meant computer programmers had to understand these conventions when designing their algorithms, and adapt their algorithms when porting to new platforms. As a result, the IEEE-754-1985 standard was created t...

Due to technological advances, it has become possible to implement floating-point cores on FPGAs in an effort to provide hardware acceleration for the myriad applications that require high performance floating-point arithmetic. However, in order to achieve a high clock rate, these floating-point cores must be deeply pipelined. Due to this deep pipelining and the complexity of floating-point ari...

The Network-on-Chip (NoC) approach for designing (System-on-Chip) SoCs is currently used for overcoming the scalability and efficiency problems of traditional on-chip interconnection schemes, such as shared buses and point-to-point links. NoC design draws on concepts from computer networks to interconnect Intellectual Property (IP) cores in a structured and scalable way, promoting design re-use...

متن کاملParameterized floating-point logarithm and exponential functions for FPGAs
As FPGAs are increasingly being used for floating-point computing, the feasibility of a library of floating-point elementary functions for FPGAs is discussed. An initial implementation of such a library contains parameterized operators for the logarithm and exponential functions. In single precision, those operators use a small fraction of the FPGA’s resources, have a smaller latency than their...
