Balancing bike sharing systems (BBSS): instance generation from the CitiBike NYC data
نویسنده
چکیده
Bike sharing systems are a very popular means to provide bikes to citizens in a simple and cheap way. The idea is to install bike stations at various points in the city, from which a registered user can easily loan a bike by removing it from a specialized rack. After the ride, the user may return the bike at any station (if there is a free rack). Services of this kind are mainly public or semi-public, often aimed at increasing the attractiveness of non-motorized means of transportation, and are usually free, or almost free, of charge for the users. Depending on their location, bike stations have specific patterns regarding when they are empty or full. For instance, in cities where most jobs are ∗Scheduling and Time-Tabling Group, DIEGM University of Udine, Via delle Scienze 206, 33100 – Udine (UD), Italy

Data Analysis and Optimization for (Citi)Bike Sharing
Bike-sharing systems are becoming increasingly prevalent in urban environments. They provide a low-cost, environmentally-friendly transportation alternative for cities. The management of these systems gives rise to many optimization problems. Chief among these problems is the issue of bicycle rebalancing. Users imbalance the system by creating demand in an asymmetric pattern. This necessitates ...
متن کاملConstraint-Based Approaches for Balancing Bike Sharing Systems
In order to meet the users’ demand, bike sharing systems must be regularly rebalanced. The problem of balancing bike sharing systems (BBSS) is concerned with designing optimal tours and operating instructions for relocating bikes among stations to maximally comply with the expected future bike demands. In this paper, we tackle the BBSS by means of Constraint Programming: first, we introduce two...
متن کاملA Hybrid ACO+CP for Balancing Bicycle Sharing Systems
Balancing bike sharing systems is an increasingly important problem, because of the rising popularity of this mean of transportation. Bike sharing systems need to be balanced so that bikes (and empty slots for returning bikes) are available to the customers, thus ensuring an adequate level of service. In this paper, we tackle the problem of balancing a real-world bike sharing system (BBSS) by m...
متن کاملBike Network Flow Prediction
Recent network analysis research has made remarkable progress on studying complex networks in a social context with machine learning techniques. One example of such a complex network is the system data of the New York Citibike bike sharing program, which consists of the data from 49 million bike trips in New York City since July 2013. By inspecting the dataset, we find out that significantly mo...

On-demand transportation is one of the major success stories of the sharing economy. Surprisingly, the rapid growth of ride-sharing platforms like Lyft and Uber or bike-sharing platforms like Citi Bike (NYC) and Divvy (Chicago) has been possible even though many of their operational challenges remain unsolved. This provides ample opportunities for operations management research on impactful rea...
