چکیده

The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) is a sensitive collateral branch of the lumbar plexus that innervates the anterolateral region of the thigh. Its compression at the level of the groin originates a particular syndrome called meralgia paresthetica. Treatment of this neuropathy may involve sectioning or freeing of the nerve, both of which require an appropriate knowledge of its anatomy. Sixty-four groin regions of formaldehydefixed adult cadavers were dissected, recording the relationships of the LFCN to the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). The LFCN was identified in all cases; in one case, it originated as a collateral branch of the femoral nerve. The horizontal distance from the ASIS to the LFCN varied from 0 to 45 mm (mean 10.8 mm). 85.9% of LFCN were located at a distance of 20 mm or less from the ASIS. The vertical distance ranged from 0 to 47 mm, with a mean of 17 mm. We did not find significant differences between the distances upon attempting to correlate them with the individual’s height or interiliac distance. The relationship between the LFCN and the ASIS is variable. In most cases, the LFCN is found within a distance of 20 mm or less from the ASIS in both the lateral and cephalocaudal directions, although it may be located as far as 4 cm or more from it. In addition to this, the LFCN may enter the groin region already divided into more than one branch, or may also course through the inguinal ligament.

Anatomic variability of groin innervation.

Inguinal hernia repairs are very common yet fairly complex surgical procedures.Variations in the anatomical course of the inguinal nerves require that diligence is taken in their proper recognition. Inadvertent surgical injury to these nerves is associated with long term postoperative pain and complications. The aim of the present study was to highlight the complexity and variation in the inner...

Variable origin and ramification pattern of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve: a case report and neurosurgical considerations.

Variations in the anatomy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) have been reported in the literature. LFCN is vulnerable to injury during several surgical operations, therefore any surgeon intervening in the area should be familiar to its topographic variability. Lesion of the nerve leads to a condition known as "meralgia paresthetica". We present a cadaveric case of a variant LFCN wher...

The clinical anatomy of laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair.

Laparoscopic approaches for abdominal surgery are being used with increasing frequency. Their advantages are sometimes negated by the disturbing incidence of postoperative sequelae. In the case of inguinal hernia repair, these are often the result of failing to understand that the anatomy of the anterior approach to the abdominal wall cannot necessarily be directly applied to laparoscopy. The i...

Received: 31 Dec, 2008 Accepted: 22 July, 2009   Abstract  The sciatic nerve, posterior cutaneus nerve of thigh, and inferior gluteal nerve are branches of sacral plexus. They leave the pelvis via greater sciatic foramen and arises in gluteal region in infra piriformis fossa. The sciatic nerve usually divides at the upper angle of the popliteal fossa to common peroneal and tibial nerves. The...

Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Application in Treatment of Meralgia Paresthetica: A Case Report

Meralgia paresthetica is a mononeuropathy which occurs as result of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve being under pressure at groin level; with numbness, pains and needles, and pain at external collateral and anterior thigh and inguinal region. Its treatment is conservative and surgical. In our study, we intended to present our clinical evaluation as result of transforaminal epidural steroid appl...
