چکیده

We present new quantitative measurements of magnetic fields on the quiet Sun. The object was (a) to measure magnetic field strengths, and (b) to test the “kilogauss model,” which posits that the apparently weak fields are actually subtelescopic knots of kilogauss fields with small filling factors. We used a new arrangement we call the spectro-videomagnetograph (SPVMG), which applies the videomagnetograph to the coude` spectrograph at Big Bear. We analyze a day’s data comprising the V signal in 8 5250 and 5247 at every point of 128 spectra, 49,200 in all. We find weak fields everywhere with mean strength of 17 Gauss and median 23.5G There are occasional network elements measuring 300-1200 Gauss. These measures are confirmed by the appropriate ratio of g-factors, the expected saturation of the stronger fields (>500G) and direct splitting measures for B>200 G. We test the models by Stenflo’s (1973) method, comparing the measured field strength in 5250 and 5234. The ratio of these measures for the 49,200 points best fits a model with filling factor unity, diverging by less than a standard deviation (SD), while the kilogauss model is 3 SD removed from agreement with the expected value. We suggest that

Proper integration time of polarization signals of internetwork regions using Sunrise/IMaX data

Distribution of magnetic fields in the quiet-Sun internetwork areas has been affected by weak polarization (in particular Stokes Q and U) signals. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the weak polarization signals, several approaches, including temporal integrations, have been proposed in the literature. In this study, we aim to investigate a proper temporal-integration time with which...

Magnetic field distribution in the quiet Sun: a reduced model approach

Context. The quiet Sun presents magnetized plasma whose field strengths vary from zero to about 2 kG. The probability density function of the magnetic field strength B efficaciously describes the statistical properties of the quiet Sun magnetic field. Aims. We simulate the dynamics and the evolution of quiet Sun magnetic elements to produce a probability density function of the field strengths ...

Comparison of transient horizontal magnetic fields in a plage region and in the quiet Sun

Aims. Properties of transient horizontal magnetic fields (THMFs) in both plage and quiet Sun regions are obtained and compared. Methods. Spectro-polarimetric observations with the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on the Hinode satellite were carried out with a cadence of about 30 seconds for both plage and quiet regions located near disk center. We select THMFs that have net linear polarization (L...

A Simple Model for the Distribution of Quiet Sun Magnetic Field Strengths

We derive a first order linear differential equation describing the shape of the probability density function of magnetic field strengths in the quiet Sun (PDF). The modeling is very schematic. It considers convective motions which continuously supply and withdraw magnetic structures. In addition, a magnetic amplification mechanism increases the field strength up to a threshold that cannot be e...

Quiet Sun Internetwork Magnetic Fields from the Inversion of Hinode Measurements

We analyze Fe I 630 nm observations of the quiet Sun at disk center taken with the spectropolarimeter of the Solar Optical Telescope aboard the Hinode satellite. A significant fraction of the scanned area, including granules, turns out to be covered by magnetic fields. We derive field strength and inclination probability density functions from a Milne-Eddington inversion of the observed Stokes ...
