چکیده

The distribution of coliforms in the sediments around three marine sewage outfalls was investigated. It was found that coliform fields extended for considerable distances around the two outfalls discharging unchlorinatcd primary treatment effluent and that a less extensive field existed around the outfall discharging more highly treated sewage. In general, the coliforms in the sediments were found in areas beneath the path of movement of the effluent field in the surface water. It is probable that the bulk of the coliforms reach the sediments by sedimentation from the overlying waters. Although the coliforms in the sediments must persist for a sufficiently long period to permit the accumulation of large numbers by deposition from low count waters, no precise estimate of the survival time in the sediment could be made.

Survival of fecal microorganisms in marine and freshwater sediments.

The survival of culturable fecal coliforms, fecal streptococci, and Clostridium perfringens spores in freshwater and marine sediments from sites near sewage outfalls was studied. In laboratory studies, the inhibition of protozoan predators with cycloheximide allowed the fecal coliforms to grow in the sediment whereas the presence of predators resulted in a net die-off. C. perfringens spores did...

INDICATIVE, PATHOGENIC, AND MARINE BACTERIA IN THE SEA Studies of the occurrence and survival of sewage-origin bacteria in coastal waters and sediments

Studies of the occurrence and survival of sewage-origin bacteria in coastal waters and sediments continued this year at the marine microbiology laboratory at California State University at Long Beach. The goal of these studies has been to determine what relationships, if any, exist between the routinely sampled indicator bacteria (e.g., coliforms, fecal streptococci) and pathogenic bacteria (e....

Impacts of a raw sewage spill on water and sediment quality in an urbanized estuary.

A sewer main serving a large municipal wastewater system ruptured, discharging approximately 3,000,000 gallons (11,355,000 L) of raw human sewage into a multi-branched tidal creek estuary along the US East Coast. The biochemical oxygen demand caused severe hypoxia in the system, causing a large fish kill. The sewage load led to high fecal coliform bacteria concentrations in the creek (maximum o...

Microbial Contamination in the Sediments and Groundwater of Tuticorin Corporation, South India Using Gis

Objective: The present study investigates the diversity, and distribution of harmful microbes in sediments and groundwater of Tuticorin Corporation. The faecal pollution indicators such as, Total coliform bacteria, Faecal coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli, Faecal streptococci were investigated in the sediments and groundwater samples from 12 locations in the study area. Methods: Groundwater a...

Antibiotic resistance among coliform and fecal coliform bacteria isolated from sewage, seawater, and marine shellfish.

Seawater and shellfish samples collected in the vicinity of a marine sewage outfall were examined for the incidence of antibiotic resistance among coliform and fecal coliform bacteria over a 2-year period. Seventy percent or more of these two groups of bacteria from both sources were resistant to one or more antibiotics. Forty-five percent of the isolates resistant to streptomycin or tetracycli...
