Direct evidence for hierarchical formation of massive early - type galaxies

چکیده
We present results from a morphological study of the distant X-ray cluster MS 1054–03 at z = 0.83. We have obtained a large, two color HST WFPC2 mosaic of this cluster, and measured redshifts of 186 galaxies in the MS 1054–03 field with the 10m Keck telescope. Of 81 spectroscopically confirmed cluster galaxies observerd with HST, 13 are merger systems. Most of these mergers will likely evolve into luminous elliptical galaxies, and some may evolve into S0 galaxies. If the galaxy population in MS 1054–03 is typical for its redshift up to ∼ 50% of ellipticals may have formed in mergers at z < 1. The mergers are generally red and have no detected [Oii] 3727 Å emission. This result is consistent with the old stellar ages of ellipticals inferred from other studies. The mergers are preferentially found towards the outskirts of the cluster, indicating they probably occur in infalling clumps. A significant overabundance of close pairs of red galaxies detected in the outskirts of MS 1054–03 confirms the large number of interacting galaxies in this cluster.

Properties of Early-type, Dry Galaxy Mergers and the Origin of Massive, Slowly Rotating, Pressure Supported Elliptical Galaxies
The luminosity dependence of kinematical and isophotal properties of elliptical galaxies is investigated using numerical simulations of galaxy merging, combined with semi-analytical models of hierarchical structure formation. Mergers of spiral galaxies as the only formation mechanism for elliptical galaxies can neither reproduce the kinematical and photometric properties of very massive ellipti...

We present a morphological study of the galaxy population of the luminous X-ray cluster MS 1054−03 at z = 0.83. The sample consists of 81 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members in a 3×2 h−1 50 Mpc area imaged in F606W and F814W with WFPC2. We find thirteen ongoing mergers in MS 1054−03, comprising 17 % of the L ∼ > L∗ cluster population. Most of these mergers will likely evolve into lumino...

متن کاملThe Evidence for Massive Star Formation in Early-Type Spiral Galaxies
A recent analysis of the IRAS database indicates that the massive star formation rates in early-type (Sa-Sab) spirals are comparable to the massive star formation rates in late-type spirals. Hα imaging of some of the infrared luminous early-type spirals reveals two types of galaxies. One type shows clear signs of interaction, whereas the other type appears to host a nuclear starburst. The occur...
متن کاملJoint Formation of QSOs and Spheroids: QSOs as clocks of star formation in Spheroids
Direct and indirect observational evidence leads to the conclusion that high redshift QSOs did shine in the core of early type galaxies during their main episode of star formation. In a previous paper we showed that the evolution of the luminosity function of QSOs can be accounted for within the framework of the analytical hierarchical model for dark matter haloes in the line of the extended Pr...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
