In situ fixation of metals and metalloids using iron-rich co-products
نویسنده
چکیده
The present work focuses on the use of Fe-rich co-products, originating from different industrial processes, as fixing agents for heavy metals and metalloids. A series of experiments were performed in microcosms to establish the potential of several coproducts, including red-mud, red gypsum and water sludge, to immobilise heavy metals and arsenic. Several chemical methods were used to determine the mobility of metals with special attention to metal concentration and speciation in soil solution and metal fluxes. Furthermore, the effect of these treatments on various biological endpoints (plants and microorganisms) was investigated in order to assess whether the remediation treatment satisfies the legislative requirements in terms of effects on environmental receptors.

Evolution of iron speciation during hydration of C4AF.
It is now well accepted and demonstrated that calcium silicate, calcium aluminate and calcium sulfo aluminate (ettringite, AFm) phases exhibit a good capability to fix metals and metalloids. Unfortunately the role of minor phases and especially calcium-ferric aluminate phase, shorthand C4AF is not well defined. In other systems like in soils or sediments iron phases play a key role in the fixat...

A simple and sensitive method for the determination of some metalloids and heavy metals in water samples is presented. The method is based on the preconcentration of the attachment of chelating functionalities with metalloids and toxic metals irreversibly and targeted towards toxic metals adsorbed on modified activated carbon, activated carbon and red soil particles at pH 3.0–9.0±0.2, followed ...
متن کاملMobility of Contaminated Heavy Metals and Metalloids in Sediments Caused by Recent Industrial Activities
Sequential leaches (sequential extractions) experiment of 62 elements were carried out for assessing the mobility of contaminated heavy metals and metalloids contaminated in natural sediments; river sediments of Oued El Harrach (Algeria) and lagoon sediments of Bizerte (Tunisia), North African Mediterranean coast. Applied extractants for the sequential leaches are: (A) distilled water for extra...
متن کاملQuantitative analysis of some important metals and metalloids in tobacco products by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)
BACKGROUND Large scale usage of tobacco causes a lot of health troubles in human. Various formulations of tobacco are extensively used by the people particularly in developing world. Besides several toxic tobacco constituents some metals and metalloids are also believed to pose health risks. This paper describes inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometric (ICP-MS) quantification of some impor...
متن کاملThe Sequential Application of Macroalgal Biosorbents for the Bioremediation of a Complex Industrial Effluent
Fe-treated biochar and raw biochar produced from macroalgae are effective biosorbents of metalloids and metals, respectively. However, the treatment of complex effluents that contain both metalloid and metal contaminants presents a challenging scenario. We test a multiple-biosorbent approach to bioremediation using Fe-biochar and biochar to remediate both metalloids and metals from the effluent...
