Excess GeV radiation and cosmic ray origin

چکیده
Particle acceleration at supernova remnant (SNR) shock waves is regarded as the most probable mechanism for providing Galactic cosmic rays at energies below 10 eV. The Galactic cosmic ray hadron component would in this picture result from the injection of relativistic particles from many SNRs. It is well known that the superposition of individual power law source spectra with dispersion in the spectral index value, which behaviour is observed in the synchrotron radio spectra of shell SNR, displays a positive curvature in the total spectrum and in particular shows a hardening at higher energies. Recent observations made with the EGRET instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory of the diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission reveal a spectrum which is incompatible with the assumption that the cosmic ray spectra measured locally hold throughout the Galaxy: the spectrum above 1 GeV, where the emission is supposedly dominated by π-decay, is harder than that derived from the local cosmic ray proton spectrum. We demonstrate that in case of a SNR origin of cosmic ray nucleons part of this γ-ray excess may be attributed to the dispersion of the spectral indices in these objects. In global averages, as are γ-ray line-of-sight integrals, this dispersion leads to a positive curvature in the composite spectrum, and hence to modified π-decay γ-ray spectra.

TeV gamma rays from Geminga and the origin of the GeV positron excess.
The Geminga pulsar has long been one of the most intriguing MeV-GeV gamma-ray point sources. We examine the implications of the recent Milagro gamma-ray Observatory detection of extended, multi-TeV gamma-ray emission from Geminga, finding that this reveals the existence of an ancient, powerful cosmic-ray accelerator that can plausibly account for the multi-GeV positron excess that has evaded ex...
متن کاملOg 7 . 1 . 3 Cosmic - Ray Positrons : Are There Primary Sources ?
The HEAT instrument has detected cosmic-ray electrons and positrons in two balloon ights, at energies between 1 and 50 GeV. The combined data set indicates that the positron fraction does not increase with energy above 10 GeV. However, our results suggest a slight overabundance of positrons at all energies compared with published predictions from secondary production sources, and possibly the h...
متن کاملFermi LAT Measurements of the Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission at Intermediate Galactic Latitudes
The diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission is produced by cosmic rays (CRs) interacting with the interstellar gas and radiation field. Measurements by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) indicated excess γ-ray emission ≥ 1 GeV relative to diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission models consistent with directly measured CR spectra (the so-c...
متن کاملDiffractive Interaction and Scaling Violation in pp → π Interaction and GeV Excess in Galactic Diffuse γ-Ray Spectrum of EGRET
We present here a new calculation of the γ-ray spectrum from pp → π in the Galactic ridge environment. The calculation includes the diffractive pp interaction and incorporates the Feynman scaling violation for the first time. Galactic diffuse γ-rays come, predominantly, from π → γγ in the sub-GeV to multi-GeV range. Hunter et al. found, however, an excess in the GeV range (“GeV Excess”) in the ...
