Using mixed-integer programming to solve power grid blackout problems

چکیده
We consider optimization problems related to the prevention of large-scale cascading blackouts in power transmission networks subject to multiple scenarios of externally caused damage. We present computation with networks with up to 600 nodes and 827 edges, and many thousands of damage scenarios. 1 Partially funded by NSF award 0521741.

متن کاملModeling and scheduling no-idle hybrid flow shop problems
Although several papers have studied no-idle scheduling problems, they all focus on flow shops, assuming one processor at each working stage. But, companies commonly extend to hybrid flow shops by duplicating machines in parallel in stages. This paper considers the problem of scheduling no-idle hybrid flow shops. A mixed integer linear programming model is first developed to mathematically form...
متن کاملSolving Single Machine Sequencing to Minimize Maximum Lateness Problem Using Mixed Integer Programming
Despite existing various integer programming for sequencing problems, there is not enoughinformation about practical values of the models. This paper considers the problem of minimizing maximumlateness with release dates and presents four different mixed integer programming (MIP) models to solve thisproblem. These models have been formulated for the classical single machine problem, namely sequ...
متن کاملOptimization Strategies for the Vulnerability Analysis of the Electric Power Grid
Identifying small groups of lines, whose removal would cause a severe blackout, is critical for the secure operation of the electric power grid. We show how power grid vulnerability analysis can be studied as a bilevel mixed integer nonlinear programming problem. Our analysis reveals a special structure in the formulation that can be exploited to avoid nonlinearity and approximate the original ...
متن کاملA Mixed Integer Programming Approach to Optimal Feeder Routing for Tree-Based Distribution System: A Case Study
A genetic algorithm is proposed to optimize a tree-structured power distribution network considering optimal cable sizing. For minimizing the total cost of the network, a mixed-integer programming model is presented determining the optimal sizes of cables with minimized location-allocation cost. For designing the distribution lines in a power network, the primary factors must be considered as m...
