Grafts for the Repair of Osteochondral Defects

چکیده
We describe a new method of biological repair of osteochondral defects. In rabbit knees an osteochondral defect was reconstructed with a cab-osseous graft made of a superficial sheet of medullary fracture callus attached to a base of cancellous bone. This was taken from the iliac bone of the same animal which had been osteotomised ten days earlier. The reparative tissues were evaluated for 24 weeks by quantitative histology, biochemical analysis of the uronic acid content, and immunohistochemical staining of collagen constituents. The callo-osseous graft provided significantly faster and better repair of the articular surface than an untreated defect or a callo-osseous graft in which the cells had been devitalised by irradiation before transplantation. Our findings indicate that the callo-osseous graft contributes to the repair process by providing both favourable extracellular matrices and pluripotential mesenchymal cells. Our study tested the hypothesis that early medullary callus generates hyaline cartilage instead of bone after transfer to an articular surface.

Background: Autogenous osteochondral grafting of articular defect in weight-bearing surface of large joints has proven to be a proper biomechanical and physiological solution for localized full-thickness defects. Objective: To study the gross and histopathological results of mosaicplasty in an animal model (sheep’s medial femoral condyle), evaluating the factors of defect and graft size, assessi...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the feasibility of repairing osteochondral defects of critical size by performing mosaicplasty using multiple sliced costal cartilage grafts, which enables repair of extensively injured knees using grafts from a single rib. DESIGN Critical osteochondral defects were prepared on the femoral groove of skeletally mature Japanese white rabbits. Costal cartilage grafts fro...
متن کاملTissue Engineering of Articular Cartilage: Perichondrial Cells in Osteochondral Repair
Efforts to expand treatment options for articular cartilage repair have increasingly focused on the implantation of cell polymer constructs. Primary cells cultured from perichondrium, a chondrogenic tissue, were found to survive in vitro within a biodegradable porous polylactic acid matrix. These perichondrocyte-polylactic acid composite grafts were then implanted within osteochondral defects d...

BACKGROUND Biomechanical and histological properties of osteochondral transplantation have not been extensively examined. HYPOTHESIS Osteochondral grafts have properties similar to native articular cartilage. STUDY DESIGN Controlled laboratory study. METHODS A 2.7 mm (diameter) x 4.0 mm (depth) osteochondral defect was created in 17 New Zealand white rabbit knees. An osteochondral graft, ...

BACKGROUND Vermilion irregularities are common secondary deformities after cleft lip repair, regressed or resected hemangiomas, trauma and tumor surgeries. Vermilion deficiency attracts considerable attention and detracts from an otherwise excellent lip repair. Minor and moderate vermilion defects can be corrected with upper lip advancement, rotation flaps, tongue flaps or grafts. Major defect...
