Mechanics of Cosserat media An introduction

چکیده
The idea of a material body endowed with both translational and rotational degrees of freedom stems from the seminal work of the Cosserat brothers (Cosserat and Cosserat, 1909). A triad of orthonormal directors (d )i=1,3 is associated to the microstructure of each material point. The material transformation describes the displacement u of the material point and the rotation R∼ with respect to the initial position X and orientations d : u = x −X , d i = R∼ (X ).d i0 (1)

Granular hypoplasticity with Cosserat effects
This paper provides an extension to Cosserat mechanics of a recently proposed version of hypoplasticity [1], and this extension is achieved economically by means of a novel complex-variable formulation of Cosserat theory. The present work represents a compact synthesis and theoretical framework for both non-polar and polar hypoplasticity, and it encompasses various special cases considered in t...
متن کاملFrom Granular Matter to Generalized Continuum∗
Following a cursory review and synthesis of multipolar continua, the rudiments of graph theory, and granular mechanics, a graph-theoretic, energy-based homogenization is proposed for the systematic derivation of multipolar stress and kinematics in granular media. This provides a weakly non-local hierarchy of multipolar field equations for quasi-static mechanics based on polynomial representatio...

adapted from R. S. Lakes, Modern Physics Letters B, 30 (24) 1650319 (9 pages) (2016). Abstract Chiral dielectrics are considered from the perspective of continuum representations of spatial heterogeneity. Static effects in isotropic chiral dielectrics are predicted, provided the electric field has nonzero third spatial derivatives. The effects are compared with static chiral phenomena in Cosser...
متن کاملThe dynamics of folding instability in a constrained Cosserat medium
Different from Cauchy elastic materials, generalized continua, and in particular constrained Cosserat materials, can be designed to possess extreme (near a failure of ellipticity) orthotropy properties and in this way to model folding in a three-dimensional solid. Following this approach, folding, which is a narrow zone of highly localized bending, spontaneously emerges as a deformation pattern...
متن کاملA discrete mechanics approach to the Cosserat rod theory—Part 1: static equilibria
A theory of discrete Cosserat rods is formulated in the language of discrete Lagrangian mechanics. By exploiting Kirchhoff’s kinetic analogy, the potential energy density of a rod is a function on the tangent bundle of the configuration manifold and thus formally corresponds to the Lagrangian function of a dynamical system. The equilibrium equations are derived from a variational principle usin...
