چکیده
Hong Kong developed rapidly from a small fishing village with few thousands of people to a highly urbanized modern city with population over 6.7 millions from 1841 to the present. This development provides a unique opportunity to study the impacts of urbanization on the environment. Many routine monitoring programs on air, noise, surface water, solid waste, and radiation have been conducted in the territory. However, only very few surveys on groundwater quality have been done (Environmental Protection Department 1988–1994; Lam 1983; Leung et al. 2005). Moreover, these surveys were restricted to rural areas. Chi-man Leung Jiu Jimmy Jiao Change of groundwater chemistry from 1896 to present in the Mid-Levels area, Hong Kong

Hydrogeochemistry of the Mid-levels Area, Hong Kong
Groundwater and seepage samples were collected from both the natural and building-modified slopes in the highly urbanized spaces of the Mid-Levels area, Hong Kong. Groundwater in the natural slopes, although retaining some signatures from rainwater, is enriched in major cations such as Na, K, Ca and Mg and some anions such as HCO3 and SO4. Clearly, water-rock interactions, such as weathering of...

Two standpipes were installed for site investigation purposes at No. 52, Hollywood Road, Hong Kong. Groundwater was observed to overflow continuously from the standpipes. After pipes were added to the top of the standpipes, the water level in the standpipes rose up to 0.6 and 3.7 m above the ground surface, respectively. This indicates that the groundwater in this site is well confined. Chemica...

It is customary in Hong Kong to assume that the hydraulic conductivity of weathered igneous rocks decreases with depth or as the rock mass becomes less weathered. Such a hydraulic conductivity pattern can only lead to an unconfined aquifer. This paper presents a case study in the regions in and around the Mid-Levels area in Hong Kong regarding a possible relatively high hydraulic conductivity (...
متن کاملFactors affecting the groundwater chemistry in a highly urbanized coastal area in Hong Kong: an example from the Mid-Levels area
Received: 22 December 2004 Accepted: 8 March 2005 Published online: 17 June 2005 Springer-Verlag 2005 Abstract Coastal areas of Hong Kong Island are one of the most extensively urbanized areas in the world. Groundwater samples in natural slopes and developed spaces in the regions centered by the MidLevels area, Hong Kong Island, were collected and analyzed to investigate the natural and anthrop...

To cope with the urban congestion problem resulted from rapid urbanization some cities are successfully using Electronic Road Pricing policy as a demand management measure. In 1982, Hong Kong Governmenttook initiative to experiment electronic road pricing in Hong Kong. Though, the project outcome reveals that Electronic Road Pricing could bring tremendous economic, social and environmental bene...
