Multiplicative cascade models for rain in hydro-meteorological disasters risk management

چکیده
We strongly believe that we should incorporate the information provided by geophysical sciences in insurance mathematics. This article is a first step in this direction. We provide a review of key results for multifractal models of rain and discuss their potential/relevance for hydro-meteorological disaster risk management. As a main result, we obtain an asymptotic expression for the tail probability of the return period that we derived from Intensity-Duration-Frequency curves under the assumption of multifractality.

Differential mortality patterns from hydro-meteorological disasters: Evidence from cause-of-death data by age and sex
This paper evaluates the heterogeneous impact of hydro-meteorological disasters on populations along the dimensions of age, sex, and human development. The analysis is based on previously untapped cause-of-death data over the period 1995– 2011 that were obtained from the WHO mortality database, and were based on the civil registration records of 63 countries/territories. Using these data, we ev...
متن کاملReducing vulnerability to hydro-meteorological extremes in Africa. A qualitative assessment of national climate disaster management policies_ Accounting for heterogeneity
In Africa, hydro-meteorological disasters (HMDs) have hit with increasing frequency and magnitude in recent years, with detrimental impacts on local livelihoods. African countries display a patchwork of national policies and institutional frameworks to address these rising HMDs. This paper examines the heterogeneity that exists within Africa′s institutional arrangements for climate-related disa...
متن کاملTitle Flood reconstruction in Kullu valley, Himachal Pradesh (India): Implications for Disaster Risk Reduction strategies
The Western Himalayan region is subjected to intense and frequent disasters, resulting from intense rainfall and its steep topography. These characteristics, together with human activities concentrated in the valley, make this region highly susceptible to hydro-meteorological hazards, and frequently led to human losses. In this context, Disaster Risk Management (DRM) policies are the basis for ...

The Effectiveness of Early Warning Systems for the Reduction of Flood Disasters: Some Experiences from Cyclone Induced Floods in Zimbabwe
Abstract The aim of any early warning systems is to provide warning to people of an impending natural hazard so that those vulnerable are aware of the potential impact of the natural processes in order to respond appropriately and minimise damage. This paper looks at variables affecting the implementation of flood hazard early warning systems in a flood prone area of Zimbabwe. Documenting the e...
