چکیده

Of all forms of storytelling, interactive storytelling presents authors with a unique opportunity: while knowledge of the story’s audience remains unavailable to traditional story authors, the nature of interactive stories to encourage player interaction allows information concerning the player’s state to be automatically inferred. Given access to such information, an author’s decision-making would become more informed, giving better chances of the story having the impact that the author intends. In this paper, we present an analysis of the decisionmaking process in interactive storytelling, and construct a method for characterizing storytelling systems based on features of their design. We demonstrate our method by characterizing three recently published systems, and review the related literature on inferring player information. Finally, we present Delayed Authoring, a new perspective on the design of interactive storytelling systems intended to take advantage of their opportunity to make stories player-specific.

PaSSAGE: A Demonstration of Player Modelling in Interactive Storytelling

This demonstration presents PaSSAGE (Player-Specific Stories via Automatically Generated Events), a decision-making AI that uses player modelling to dynamically select the content of an interactive story. Through player modelling, PaSSAGE provides game designers with the opportunity to delay their design decisions to run-time, allowing further refinement based on an automatically learned model ...

Learning Player Preferences to Inform Delayed Authoring

Of all forms of Intelligent Narrative, interactive narratives are uniquely well-poised to benefit from player modelling techniques. Given the availability of immediate player feedback as interactions with the narrative’s world, the traditional task of delayed authoring can be informed with the author’s knowledge of which types of players should prefer each event; this allows generated narrative...

Storylining Suspense - An Authoring Environment for Structuring Non-linear Interactive Narratives

$%675$&7 We describe an approach to a new authoring method for interactive storytelling. After positioning digital storytelling in a theoretical context to literature, we consider the author’s view of the tools to be used and introduce a coherent environment that does not restrict the creative process and lets the author feel comfortable, leading him to create well-narrated, interactive non-lin...

Interactive Storytelling: A Player Modelling Approach

In recent years, the fields of Interactive Storytelling and Player Modelling have independently enjoyed increased interest in both academia and the computer games industry. The combination of these technologies, however, remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we present PaSSAGE (PlayerSpecific Stories via Automatically Generated Events), an interactive storytelling system that uses player m...

Crowd-Sourced AI Authoring with ENIGMA

ENIGMA is an experimental platform for collaborative authoring of the behaviour of autonomous virtual characters in interactive narrative applications. The main objective of this system is to overcome the bottleneck of knowledge acquisition that exists in generative storytelling systems through a combination of crowd-sourcing and machine learning. While the authoring front-end of the applicatio...
