چکیده

Absfrucf-A comprehensive analysis of the symmetric nonlinear directional coupler as a function of the excitation conditions is reported. The analysis is based on a coupled-mode technique in normalized (dimensionless) parameters, using the linear supermodes of the guiding structure, most of the results being derived from the Hamiltonian of the resulting nonlinear equations. The exchange of power between the branches in the coupler is graphically described by means of the trajectories of the motion in the phase space. The effect of saturation of the nonlinear index has been included.

Development of Forward-wave Directional Couplers Loaded by Periodic Shunt Shorted Stubs

In this paper a new procedure for designing forward-wave directional couplers using periodic shunt short circuited stubs is proposed. A new type of cell using these stubs, which enlarge the phase difference between even- and odd modes of a uniform microstrip coupled line is introduced. Using the equivalent circuit model for even- and odd-modes of the proposed cell, the elements of the  ABCD tra...

Directional coupling for solitary waves in quadratic nonlinearity

The propagation of temporal solitary waves, formed in the second-order nonlinear medium, is analysed in waveguide directional couplers. The influence of the thirdorder nonlinearity on the switching effect is also presented. Recently, the great effort of nonlinear guided-wave phenomena research is focused on the cascaded second-order process which can produce relatively large intensity-dependent...

Nonlinear switching and reshaping of slow-light pulses in Bragg-grating couplers

We study the propagation and switching of slow-light pulses in nonlinear directional couplers composed of two parallel waveguides, where each waveguide contains a Bragg grating. We show that by optimizing the phase shift between the Bragg gratings, one can obtain specific dispersion characteristics enabling all-optical pulse manipulation in space and in time. We demonstrate that the power-contr...

Phase-matched guided-wave optical bistability in x s2d optical resonators

Cascaded second-order nonlinear effects attract great interest because of their potential use in devices that require nonlinear (NL) phase shifts. – 9 It is only recently that the case of x s2d distributed couplers in the cascading regime has been considered. The nonlinear effect studied in Ref. 10 is second-harmonic generation, for which only the fundamental frequency field (at v) is incident ...

Soliton controlling, switching, and splitting in nonlinear fused-fiber couplers

We propose an exactly solvable model of soliton-based pulse control that describes the physically important situation when the soliton period is much longer than the length of the coupling region in a nonlinear fiber coupler. This case can occur, e.g., in fused-fiber couplers. We demonstrate that the problem of soliton interaction and switching in such a coupler can be reduced to a linear relat...
