Nonblocking WDM switching networks with full and limited wavelength conversion

چکیده
In recent years, with the rapid exhaustion of the capacity in wide area networks led by Internet and multimedia applications, demand for high bandwidth has been growing at a very fast pace. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is a promising technique for utilizing the huge available bandwidth in optical fibers. In this paper, we consider efficient designs of nonblocking WDM permutation switching networks. Such designs require nontrivial extensions from the existing designs of electronic switching networks. We first propose several permutation models in WDM switching networks ranging from no wavelength conversion, to limited wavelength conversion, to full wavelength conversion, and analyze the network performance in terms of the permutation capacity and network cost, such as the number of optical cross-connect elements and the number of wavelength converters required for each model. We then give two methods for constructing nonblocking multistage WDM switching networks to reduce the network cost.

Nonblocking WDM Multicast Switching Networks
ÐWith ever increasing demands on bandwidth from emerging bandwidth-intensive applications, such as video conferencing, E-commerce, and video-on-demand services, there has been an acute need for very high bandwidth transport network facilities. Optical networks are a promising candidate for this type of applications. At the same time, many bandwidth-intensive applications require multicast servi...
متن کاملLiterature Survey of nonblocking network topologies
The performance of a parallel computer greatly depends upon how, the different processors are capable of exchanging data. This, thus require an arbitrary permutation (nonblocking) to be done by the connection networks. A nonblocking network is capable of providing N parallel paths between a pair of nodes forming any arbitrary permutation. In this paper, we present three different simple nonbloc...

Abstract. We propose a framework to analyze and compare wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) switching networks qualitatively and quantitatively. The framework not only help analyze and compare the complexity of WDM switching networks, but also explain interesting properties of different designs. Then, several important problems arising from this idea are addressed, and complexity bounds are d...

In this paper we study the performance of bufferless optical WDM packet switching networks with various wavelength conversion degrees. We first introduce an optimal scheduling algorithm that maximizes the network throughput in this type of network. We then derive a novel analytical model to evaluate the network performance in terms of packet loss probability under the scheduling algorithm for B...
متن کاملSelf-Routing Nonblocking WDM Switches Based on Arrayed Waveguide Grating
Arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is a promising technology for constructing high-speed large-capacity WDM switches, because it can switch fast, is scalable to large size and consumes little power. To take the full advantage of high-speed AWG, the routing control of a massive AWG-based switch should be as simple as possible. In this paper, we focus on the self-routing design of AWG-based switches...
