A Case of Pneumatosis Intestinalis Associated with Antipsychotic Medication

چکیده
Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) is an uncommon but important condition characterized by the accumulation of gases in the submucosa or subserosa of the gastrointestinal wall. The clinical course of PI represents a wide spectrum of conditions and outcomes that range from benign to life-threatening. Although controversy exists about the exact cause of PI, mucosal integrity, intraluminal pressure, gases, and bacterial flora are thought to have interactive roles in the formation of PI. Antipsychotic drugs are known to decrease bowel motility inducing constipation and ileus, ultimately increasing the intraluminal pressure which rarely results into PI. In Korea, several cases of PI caused by various etiologies have been reported. However, there has been no report of PI associated with antipsychotic drugs. We report a rare case of PI who was taking antipsychotic drugs due to schizophrenia. (Korean J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2009;15:130-134)

Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody–associated Glomerulonephritis Complicated by Pneumatosis Intestinalis
Pneumatosis intestinalis is a characteristic imaging phenomenon indicating the presence of gas in the bowel wall. The link between pneumatosis intestinalis and various kinds of autoimmune diseases has been reported anecdotally, while information regarding the cases with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitis complicated by concurrent pneumatosis intestinalis is lacki...
متن کاملAbdominal Tuberculosis in a Child Presenting with Radiological Evidence of Pneumatosis Intestinalis and Portal Venous Gas
Pneumatosis intestinalis, in association with portal venous gas, is a rare finding in children and young adults. In radiological studies, it is characterized by gas-filled cysts within the bowel-wall. It is often a sign of the serious significant underlying illness and is associated with a poor prognosis. A case of pneumatosis intestinalis and portal venous gas associated with abdominal tubercu...
متن کاملBenign pneumatosis intestinalis: a cause of massive pneumoperitoneum in the adult.
Pneumatosis intestinalis (gas in the bowel wall) is often a benign condition, but it may mimic bowel ischemia or infarction and lead to unnecessary surgical intervention, especially when associated with pneumoperitoneum. We present a case of benign pneumatosis intestinalis with massive pneumoperitoneum and discuss various distinguishing features that may aid in its diagnosis.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is a rare disorder with multiple submucosal or subserosal gas-filled cysts along the gastrointestinal wall. Pneumatosis intestinalis can be classified as either primary (idiopathic) or secondary. In the latter form, a causal relationship has been established with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, amyloidosis, infectious colitis, intestinal obstruction, is...
متن کاملImprovement of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis after steroid tapering in a patient with bronchial asthma: a case report
INTRODUCTION We report the case of a patient who was diagnosed as having pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis while being treated with prednisolone for bronchial asthma. Even before we had experienced a case of this, the relationship between pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis and prednisolone was unclear. In this case, pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis was improved with the reduction of predniso...
