Morphology of the Ommatidia of the Compound Eye of Limulus
نویسنده
چکیده
The sensory portion of the ommatidium of the compound eye of Limulus has been studied with the electron microscope. In axial longitudinal section the rhabdom appears to be made up of small polygons, and in transverse section the rhabdom appears as a banded structure of dark lines. Thus in three dimensions the rhabdom resembles a honeycomb composed of tubular units, the long axes of which lie in transverse planes and are oriented perpendicular to the retinula cell's contours. The tubular units, which are about 140 mmicro in diameter in Limulus (70 mmicro in diameter in the spider and Scutigera), are microvilli of the borders of the retinula cells. The walls of these microvilli are continuous with fine linear structures (membranes) in the cytoplasm of the retinula cells. In transverse sections of the ommatidium oval bodies interpreted as mitochondria are observed in an annular zone at the tips of the rhabdom's rays. These mitochondria, which are 2 to 10 micro in diameter, are crowded with irregular closed outlines about 100 mmicro in diameter. Possible functions of components of the ommatidium are discussed.

Postembryonic growth of the compound eye of the cockroach.
The postembryonic growth of the compound eye of the cockroach Periplaneta americana involves increases in the size of the individual ommatidia as well as a 35-fold increase in the number of ommatidia. These ommatidia are added to the anterior, dorsal, and ventral margins of the eye by means of an almost continuous process of cell division in the proliferation zone in these margins. This prolife...
متن کاملPolarized Light and Angle of Stimulus Incidence in the Compound Eye of Limulus.
Evidence has been accumulating that the polarized-light sensitivities of various single ommatidia in the Limulus eye were different and that even the same ommatidium might show altered responses under changed conditions. Since the orientation of the optic axes of these units varies widely from one place to another in the eye, the most likely parameter concerned here seemed to be the incident an...
متن کاملEvolution of Eye Morphology and Rhodopsin Expression in the Drosophila melanogaster Species Subgroup
A striking diversity of compound eye size and shape has evolved among insects. The number of ommatidia and their size are major determinants of the visual sensitivity and acuity of the compound eye. Each ommatidium is composed of eight photoreceptor cells that facilitate the discrimination of different colours via the expression of various light sensitive Rhodopsin proteins. It follows that var...
متن کاملInhibition in the Limulus lateral eye in situ
Inhibition in the Limulus lateral eye in situ is qualitatively similar to that in the excised eye. In both preparations ommatidia mutually inhibit one another, and the magnitude of the inhibitory effects are linear functions of the response rate of individual ommatidia. The strength of inhibition exerted between single ommatidia is also about the same for both preparations; however, stronger ef...
متن کاملCell lineage and cell determination in the developing compound eye of the cockroach, Periplaneta americana.
By grafting between eye colour mutants of the cockroach Periplaneta americana we have investigated (i) the hypothesis that cells within an ommatidium of the fused rhabdom type are clonally derived from a single mother cell and (ii) we have tested the suggestion that cells from non-prospective eye epidermis can form ommatidia when grafted next to eye tissue. Mosaic eyes containing cells of the t...
