چکیده

We are designing computer programs for Interactive Drama, where the audience can act to modify the story while the computer responds to these acts and maintains the narrative nature of the experience. Such computer based Interactive Drama requires narrative models able to both simulate the narrative on a deep level, and allow the user to interact with it. We discuss in this paper the extent to which structuralist models are useful for this purpose. Then, we describe our own computer model and its structuralist sources. Finally we discuss the limits of Structuralism for our model. General Terms Algorithms, Design, Human Factors.

Structural Writing, a Design Principle for Interactive Drama

Computer-based highly interactive drama involves different authoring approaches, compared to linear media. Underlying design principles needs to be understood in order to guide the authoring process, to teach authors and to design better systems. This paper identifies a fundamental design principle termed Structural Writing that underlies some of the most generative approaches in interactive dr...

A preliminary poetics for interactive drama and games

Interactive drama has been discussed for a number of years as a new AI-based interactive experience (Laurel 1986, Bates 1992). While there has been substantial technical progress in building believable agents (Bates, Loyall and Reilly 1992, Blumberg 1996, Hayes-Roth, van Gent and Huber 1996), and some technical progress in interactive plot (Weyhrauch 1997), no work has yet been completed which ...

A New Approach to Interactive Drama: From Intelligent Characters to an Intelligent Virtual Narrator

The limits of current forms of interactive drama have been now clearly identified: interactive character based stories are poorly interactive, the plot remaining nearly linear; interactive virtual worlds are poorly dramatic, with no plot at all; the role of the user is confuse. This paper will give guidelines on how those problems should be tackled, by putting Artificial Intelligence (AI) in th...

Optimizing Players' Expected Enjoyment in Interactive Stories

In interactive storytelling systems and other story-based computer games, a drama manager is a background agent that aims to bring about an enjoyable and coherent experience for the players. In this paper, we present a personalized drama manager that increases a player’s expected enjoyment without removing player agency. Our personalized drama manager models a player’s preference using data-dri...

A sequential recommendation approach for interactive personalized story generation

In story-based games or other interactive story systems, a Drama Manager is an omniscient agent that acts to bring about a particular sequence of plot points for the user to experience. We present a Drama Manager that uses player modeling to personalize the user’s story according to his or her storytelling preferences. In order to deliver personalized stories, a Drama Manager must make decision...
