Performance of Thermoplastic Elastomeric and Thermoset Insulators under Accelerated Acid Rain Multistress Conditions

چکیده
Polymers are becoming the material of choice for high voltage outdoor insulators. However being mostly organic, they are susceptible to aging and degradation (weathering) due to environmental (and electrical) stresses. This necessitates the study of their long-term behavior. It is desirable to study the long-term performance of the insulators in the service environment under multistress conditions encountered by the insulators to better simulate the actual conditions. This paper presents the results of the studies of a novel, third generation, environmental friendly thermoplastic elastomeric (TPE) insulators and conventional thermoset silicone rubber (SiR) insulators in Connecticut, USA and Taxila, Pakistan. 28 and 10kV insulators were used for this purpose. The aging phenomena were characterized by visual observations, hydrophobicity classification and using sophisticated materials analysis techniques, such as FTIR. The results indicated that the TPE insulators had discoloration and arcing after two thousand hours of aging while the silicone rubber insulators had no arcing.

Since the insulators of transmission lines are exposed to different environmental conditions, it is important task to study insulators performance under different conditions. In this paper, silicone rubber insulators performance under different environmental conditions including rainy, icy, salt and cement are proposed and exactly is studied. Electric fields (E-fields) and voltage distributions...
متن کاملForce decay evaluation of thermoplastic and thermoset elastomeric chains: A mechanical design comparison.
OBJECTIVES To compare the following over a period of 8 weeks: (1) force decay between thermoplastic (TP) and thermoset (TS) elastomeric chains; (2) force decay between light (200-g) and heavy (350-g) initial forces; and (3) force decay between direct chains and chain loops (stretched from one pin around the second pin and back to the first pin). MATERIALS AND METHODS TP and TS chains were obt...
متن کاملUltrasonic welding of thermoset matrix composites reinforced with glass fibers using a co-cured retaining layer
In this paper, ultrasonic welding of glass fiber reinforced thermoses, co-cured whit a thermoplastic has been studied. Co-curing process forms a connection between the thermoset and the thermoplastic while curing the composite. Considering that the calculated stress should not be related to the dimensions of the sample, a horn with a tip dimension smaller than the standard overlap was used. The...

متن کاملA comparative study of the wear resistance of thermoplastic and thermoset coatings
Thermoset and thermoplastic polymeric materials are used as coatings on the bore of downhole tubulars such as water injectors in the oil industry. Previous work has indicated that such coatings can fail by impact damage and by abrasion from the wire used to lower inspection tools down the tubular. The wire is commonly called “slickline” and the type of wear is called “wireline wear”. However, t...
