How Gravitational Forces arise from Curvature

چکیده
In the second set of supplementary notes — Gravity, Metrics and Coordinates — we introduced the idea that matter induces spacetime curvature, and we argued that this curvature is fully described by the metric. In the case of a static, spherically symmetric mass distribution, we presented the Einstein Field Equations whose solution gives the metric and therefore the geometry of spacetime. The current notes complete the other half of our introduction to general relativity by deriving the equations of motion of massive bodies falling freely in a gravitational field.

Gravitational energy in quadratic-curvature gravities.
We define energy (E) and compute its values for gravitational systems involving terms quadratic in curvature. There are significant differences, both conceptually and concretely, from Einstein theory. For D=4, all purely quadratic models admit constant curvature vacua with arbitrary Lambda, and E is the "cosmological" Abbott-Deser (AD) expression; instead, E always vanishes in flat, Lambda=0, b...
متن کاملSteep capillary-gravity waves in oscillatory shear-driven flows
We study steep capillary-gravity waves that form at the interface between two stably stratified layers of immiscible liquids in a horizontally oscillating vessel. The oscillatory nature of the external forcing prevents the waves from overturning, and thus enables the development of steep waves at large forcing. They arise through a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation, characterized by the squar...
متن کاملDynamic curvature regulation accounts for the symmetric and asymmetric beats of Chlamydomonas flagella
Cilia and flagella are model systems for studying how mechanical forces control morphology. The periodic bending motion of cilia and flagella is thought to arise from mechanical feedback: dynein motors generate sliding forces that bend the flagellum, and bending leads to deformations and stresses, which feed back and regulate the motors. Three alternative feedback mechanisms have been proposed:...
متن کاملTime Map
The interaction of mass will determine the curvature of space-time, may determine that events proceed at different rates of time at each point in space, so each has a corresponding gravitational potential time. So we can find different values of gravity (g), corresponding to different times (t), thus making a "map of time in space." The space-time is curved by present mass, causing a force of a...
متن کاملCapillarity-induced ordering of spherical colloids on an interface with anisotropic curvature.
Objects floating at a liquid interface, such as breakfast cereals floating in a bowl of milk or bubbles at the surface of a soft drink, clump together as a result of capillary attraction. This attraction arises from deformation of the liquid interface due to gravitational forces; these deformations cause excess surface area that can be reduced if the particles move closer together. For micromet...
