Self-employment and windfall gains in Britain: Evidence from panel data
نویسنده
چکیده
Liquidity constraints can affect self-employment in a number of ways. They can prohibit potential entrepreneurs from starting up in business, they can restrict the growth of existing entrepreneurial activities and, in the extreme, they can result in small business failure. This paper uses British panel data to investigate the effects of relaxing liquidity constraints on selfemployment through the unanticipated receipt of windfall gains. The results suggest that the amount of payment received has a positive and concave effect on the probability of entering self-employment and on the performance of an existing self-employment enterprise, consistent with the liquidity constraint hypothesis. Windfalls, Wealth, and the Transition to Self-employment
We examine the transition to, and survival in, self-employment among a sample of British workers. We find evidence of capital constrains, with wealthier individuals being more likely to transit ceteris paribus. Windfall gains raise the probability of transition at a decreasing rate – gains or more than £20000–£22000 reduce the probability of transition – and larger gains reduce the probability ...

In this paper we investigate the link between entrepreneurship and financial constraints. We develop a dynamic partial equilibrium model of an individual utility maximization that predicts that the person is more likely to start her business when financial constraints are eased. We test this hypothesis using German Socio-Economic Panel data covering the periods 2000–2002 and measure release fro...
متن کاملSelf-employment in Britain: When, who and why?
This work explores self-employment in Britain across recent years and examines changes in the flows of individuals into and out of self-employment. Panel data suggest that the large increase in self-employment in the 1980s was due to increases in the inflow rate, while an increase in the outflow rate in the early 1990s has stopped this trend. Gender, parents occupation, assets and considering t...

The Effects of In-Work Benefit Reform in Britain on Couples: Theory and Evidence This paper examines the effects of the Working Families’ Tax Credit (WFTC) on couples in Britain. Its main implications are then tested using panel data from the British Household Panel Surv...
