چکیده
Teichoic acid antigen extracted from cell walls of a strain of Staphylococcus aureus has been shown to have the unique structure of glycerolphosphate, with N-acetyl-d-galactosamine as the immunodominant substituent.

Studies on the Chemistry and Immunochemistry of Cell Walls of Staphylococcus Aureus
The cell walls of an 80/81 strain of Staphylococcus aureus (NYH-6) contain alanine, glycine, glutamic acid, lysine, muramic acid, glucosamine, and ribitol phosphate. 94 per cent of the phosphorus and 41 per cent of the glucosamine are removed by extraction of the cell walls with hot 5 per cent TCA, but significant amounts of the other constituents are not extracted by this procedure. The residu...
متن کاملStudies on the Interactions between Components of Staphylococcus Aureus and Staphylococcus Bacteriophage
The cell walls of Staphylococcus aureus are capable of inactivating S. aureus bacteriophage. Furthermore, the cell walls isolated from S. aureus of a given phage type inactivate a variety of different staphylococcal bacteriophages. Under the conditions employed neither the isolated mucopeptide nor teichoic acid components of the cell walls act as bacteriophage receptor.
متن کاملUse of bacteriophage-resistant mutants to study the nature of the bacteriophage receptor site of Staphylococcus aureus.
Bacteriophage-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus H were isolated after mutagenesis with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. Cell walls isolated from about half of these resistant strains were incapable of inactivating phages and were shown to lack N-acetyl-d-glucosamine (GlcNAc) in their cell wall teichoic acid. Apart from the lack of GlcNAc, two of these mutant strains were deficient...
متن کاملChemical Basis for an Immunological Specificity of a Strain of Staphylococcus Aureus
Antisera, prepared against formalin-killed cells of Staphylococcus aureus, strain Copenhagen, agglutinated the cell walls of this strain. The agglutination was inhibited by the teichoic acid from the cell wall of this strain, by any degradation product of this teichoic acid which contained the alpha-acetylglucosaminyl-ribitol unit, by alpha-phenyl-acetylglucosaminide, and by N-acetylglucosamine...
متن کاملThe key role of peptidoglycan in the opsonization of Staphylococcus aureus.
In an effort to determine the staphylococcal cell surface component(s) of importance in opsonization, cell walls (peptidoglycan and teichoic acid) and peptidoglycan were isolated from Staphylococcus aureus strain H grown in [3H]glycine-containing broth. After incubation of the cell walls and peptidoglycan with various opsonic sources, uptake by human polymorphonuclear leukocytes was measured. T...
