چکیده

In Europe G6PD deficiency is encountered most frequently in Sardinia and Greece but may also be found in other Mediterranean countries (Sansone, Piga, and Segni, 1958; Szeinberg, Asher, and Sheba, 1958), including Yugoslavia (Fraser, Grunwald, and Stamatoyannopoulos, 1966). The occurrence of haemolytic anaemia after ingestion of fava beans in Yugoslavia was first reported as a clinical finding by Vince-Ribaric in 1962. The patients belonged to two autochthonous Croatian families from the vicinity of the town of Zadar on the Adriatic Coast. In the present study a full account is given of all the data obtained in the patients and their families.

G6PD deficiency and chronic hemolysis: four new mutants--relationships between clinical syndrome and enzyme kinetics.

G6PD deficiency of the common type (Gd’ and Gd11t.d1 rranenn) results in extremely mild chronic hemolysis. In contrast, 65 males (from 47 unrelated families) have been reported with a different syndrome of severe chronic hemolysis associated with a superficially similar deficiency in the activity of G6PD. Five new such patients (from four unrelated families) are reported. Biochemical characteri...

Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency and Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia

Background: Jaundice is affecting over 60-80 percent of neonates in the first week of life. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, which is an important cause of pathologic hyperbilirubinemia, can lead to hemolytic anemia, jaundice and kernicterus. The present study was performed to determine the prevalence of G6PD deficiency among icteric neonates in Shirvan, Iran. Methods: This...
