ITRI-95-17 Designing Drafting Tools for and with Translators

چکیده
Abstract The generation by computer of multilingual documentation has been the object of many recent studies, motivated by the need to meet increasing demands with decreasing resources. These studies concentrate on the fully automatic generation of texts, leaving translators out of the loop. In contrast, our goal within the DRAFTER project is to provide tools to support rather than replace the technical communicator, designed with the benefit of interviews with professional linguists to ascertain their requirements. In this paper, we look at emerging trends within the Language Industry, where the role and skills of the translator are changing. We then describe a computational system aimed at supporting translators in their new role.

ITRI - 97 - 06 NLG tools to support technical authors and translators Richard Power
We assess the results and implications of two projects which have developed multilingual generation tools to support technical writers and translators. These projects have employed a strategy based on two ideas: first, allow technical writers or domain experts to define the content of the generated texts through a user interface specially tailored to the domain; second, restrict the scope of th...
متن کاملMultilingual Drafting of Instructional Texts
This paper presents a new approach to computer assisted production of parallel instructions in multiple languages: multilingual generation. At the IT Research Institute at the University of Brighton, we are working on two major projects on multilingual generation of instructions, funded by the CEC and SERC/DTI and involving collaboration with groups of professional technical authors and transla...
متن کاملTranslation Technology Tools and Professional Translators’ Attitudes toward Them
Today technology is an integral part of professional translation; and it is generally assumed that translators’ attitudes toward translation technology tools influence their interaction with technology (Bundgaard, 2017). Therefore, the present two-phase study seeks to shed some light on what translation technology tools are and how professional translators feel toward them. The research method ...
متن کاملCorrelating Translation Product and Translation Process Data of Professional and Student Translators
The paper presents an exploratory study of the translation processes for 12 student and 12 professional translators. We relate properties of the translators’ process data (eye movements and keystrokes) with the quality of the produced translations, using BLEU scores and human evaluation scores for fluency and accuracy to assess translation quality. We also investigate how BLEU scores correlate ...
متن کاملChanging Landscape in Translation
Translating and translation are transformed with Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Within three decades, a new work environment is shaking up the translator’s world. New types of translators are emerging. The balance between supply and demand is changing. However, we need adequate tools and methods to investigate the new hierarchy which has become established between translators, ...
