Collective motion in an active suspension of Escherichia coli bacteria

چکیده
We investigate experimentally the emergence of collective motion in the bulk of an active suspension of Escherichia coli bacteria. When increasing the concentration from a dilute to a semi-dilute regime, we observe a continuous crossover from a dynamical cluster regime to a regime of ‘bio-turbulence’ convection patterns. We measure a length scale characterizing the collective motion as a function of the bacteria concentration. For bacteria fully supplied with oxygen, the increase of the correlation length is almost linear with concentration and at the largest concentrations tested, the correlation length could be as large as 24 bacterial body sizes (or 7–8 when including the flagella bundle). In contrast, under conditions of oxygen shortage the correlation length saturates at a value of around 7 body lengths. S Online supplementary data available from stacks.iop.org/NJP/16/025003/ mmedia

From Clarkia to Escherichia and Janus: the physics of natural and synthetic active colloids
An active colloid is a suspension of particles that transduce free energy from their environment and use the energy to engage in intrinsically non-equilibrium activities such as growth, replication and self-propelled motility. An obvious example of active colloids is a suspension of bacteria such as Escherichia coli, their physical dimensions being almost invariably in the colloidal range. Synt...
متن کاملIn Vitro Biocontrol of Escherichia coli Through the Immobilization of its Specific Lytic Bacteriophage on Cellulose Acetate Biodegradable Film
Background and Aims: Bacteriophages are mandatory bacterial parasites that are harmless to human and animal, which are used by dipping or spraying in food as natural antimicrobial agents. The use of these methods leads to wasting or trapping of phage in food, but its immobilization on the polymer surface facilitates the contact of phage with the host cell at the food surface. Therefore, the aim...
متن کاملThe Over-Expression of Biologically Active Human Growth Hormone in a T5-Based System in Escherichia coli, Studying Temperature Effect
We studied the expression of human growth hormone (hGH) in E. coli under a bacteriophage T5-base promoter in a pQE30 expression vector. For an efficient expression of hGH cDNA, a number of codons at the hGH N-terminal coding region were altered based on the E. coli major codons. An over-expression of hGH in the bacteria, carrying the recombinant plasmids, was observed at 37°C in the presence of...
متن کاملEvaluation of Efflux pump activity among Uropathogenic Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia multiple- Drug Resistance isolates
Antibiotic resistance is a phenomenon in which antibiotic used to treat bacteria becomes useless due to resistance mechanism. Increased drug resistance and occurrence of Multiple Drug Resistance in bacteria specificity nosocomial and Urinary Tract Infection bacteria has reduced the possibilities of treating these infectious diseases. Efflux pumps are one of the major mechanism of MDR in bacteri...

The product biofilm by E.coli strain can cause serious problem for human health. Catheter is considered to be s suitable place for colonization of microorganisms, so that in %5-10 of patients who used catheter for only one day and also in all patients who used it for over 28 days, this colonization of bacteria is observed on catheter. This study is come out in order to compare biofilm formation...
