چکیده
I Instrumental behavior refers to those actions whose acquisition and mainte nance depend on their consequences for the animal or, in others words, on the fact that the action is irzslrumClllal in causing some outcome. The func ,t tional significance of the capacity for instrumental action is gO obvious.as to require little comment; it is this capacity that allows us and other animals to learn to control our environment in the service of our needs and desires. Consider a purely Pavlovian animal equipped only with the capacity to detect and learn about the predictive rclations between signals and impor tant events in the world, but not about the contingencies between its actions

The basal ganglia are a collection of subcortical nuclei thought to underlie a wide variety of vertebrate behavior. Although a great deal is known about the functional and physiological properties of the basal ganglia, relatively few models have been formally developed that have been tested against both behavioral and physiological data. Our previous work (Ashby & Crossley, 2011, J. of Cognitiv...
متن کاملAttention is necessary for subliminal instrumental conditioning
The capacity of humans and other animals to provide appropriate responses to stimuli anticipating motivationally significant events is exemplified by instrumental conditioning. Interestingly, in humans instrumental conditioning can occur also for subliminal outcome-predicting stimuli. However, it remains unclear whether attention is necessary for subliminal instrumental conditioning to take pla...
متن کاملClassical and instrumental conditioning: the general laws of connections between "centers".
This is a synopsis of the author's concept of the physiological mechanisms of classical and instrumental conditioning. In the classical conditioned reflex the connection is established between the central representations of the conditioned and unconditioned stimuli while in the instrumental reflex it is established between the representation of the former stimulus and the kinesthetic representa...
متن کاملTransfer of Stimulus Control across Instrumental Responses is attenuated by Extinction in Human Instru- mental Conditioning
Transfer of behavioral control by a discriminative stimulus (S D ) between different instrumental responses trained with the same outcome has been consistently observed in nonhuman animals, regardless of whether the discriminative stimulus and the instrumental response have undergone extinction. Based on this result, it has been proposed that extinction of nonhuman instrumental learning does no...
متن کاملThe role of the nucleus accumbens in instrumental conditioning: Evidence of a functional dissociation between accumbens core and shell.
In three experiments we examined the effect of bilateral excitotoxic lesions of the nucleus accumbens core or shell subregions on instrumental performance, outcome devaluation, degradation of the instrumental contingency, Pavlovian conditioning, and Pavlovian-instrumental transfer. Rats were food deprived and trained to press two levers, one delivering food pellets and the other a sucrose solut...

The possibility of maintaining an ingestive instrumental reflex following the transfer from oral food reinforcement to different kinds of intragastric reinforcements (liquid food, water, hypertonic NaCl and morphine) was investigated. The experiment carried out on male hooded rats with previously implanted nasopharyngeal gastric tube showed that in all but the morphine reinforced group the perf...
