Optically sensitive Medipix2 detector for adaptive optics wavefront sensing

چکیده
A new hybrid optical detector is described that has many of the attributes desired for the next generation adaptive optics (AO) wavefront sensors. The detector consists of a proximity focused MCP read out by multipixel application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips developed at CERN (“Medipix2”) with individual pixels that amplify, discriminate and count input events. The detector has 256 x 256 pixels, zero readout noise (photon counting), can be read out at 1kHz frame rates and is abutable on 3 sides. The Medipix2 readout chips can be electronically shuttered down to a temporal window of a few microseconds with an accuracy of 10 nanoseconds. When used in a Shack-Hartmann style wavefront sensor, a detector with 4 Medipix chips should be able to centroid approximately 5000 spots using 7 x 7 pixel sub-apertures resulting in very linear, off-null error correction terms. The quantum efficiency depends on the optical photocathode chosen for the bandpass of interest. © 2001 Elsevier Science. All rights reserved

Laboratory MCAO Test-Bed for Developing Wavefront Sensing Concepts.
An experimental optical bench test-bed for developing new wavefront sensing concepts for Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) systems is described. The main objective is to resolve imaging problems associated with wavefront sensing of the atmospheric turbulence for future MCAO systems on Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). The test-bed incorporates five reference sources, two deformable mirror...
متن کاملA Detector Array For Direct Control of a Deformable Mirror
A wavefront sensing detector array is presented with capabilities suited towards high-order adaptive optics systems. The phase of the wavefront is sensed by modulating and synchronously sampling the fringes of a white light interferogram imaged onto the array. The nature of the modulation is characterized by a voltage signal, which is delivered as an input to the array. As a fringe moves across...
متن کاملPhase contrast techniques for wavefront sensing and calibration in adaptive optics
The wavefront sensor is the most critical component of an adaptive optics (AO) system. Most astronomical systems use one of a small number of alternatives, notably the Shack-Hartmann or the curvature sensor; these are sensitive to the first and second derivative of the wavefront phase, respectively. In this paper, we explore a novel adaptation of the phase-contrast techmque developed for micros...
متن کاملShack-Hartmann sensor improvement using optical binning.
We present a design improvement for a recently proposed type of Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor that uses a cylindrical (lenticular) lenslet array. The improved sensor design uses optical binning and requires significantly fewer detector pixels than the corresponding conventional or cylindrical Shack-Hartmann sensor, and so detector readout noise causes less signal degradation. Additionally, de...

The effects of photon noise, aliasing, wavefront chromaticity and scintillation on the point spread function (PSF) contrast achievable with ground based adaptive optics (AO) are evaluated for different wavefront sensing schemes. I show that a wavefront sensor (WFS) based upon the Zernike phase contrast technique offers the best sensitivity to photon noise at all spatial frequencies, while the S...
