Embryonic divisions

چکیده
The British prime minister, Gordon Brown, may have been hoping for a quiet Easter break but he soon got warning in the press of an issue that would scupper any such thoughts. The government is backing a bill that will put into law many of the practices currently licensed case by case by the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority. Britain is currently one of the nations at the forefront of human embryology research which has been a great boost for scientists in the field, but an ongoing problem for opponents. So the prospect of the new bill was the perfect platform for opponents. " The bill represents a monstrous attack on human rights, human dignity and human life, " said Cardinal Keith O'Brian, leader of the Catholic Church in Scotland, " In some European countries one could be jailed for doing what we intend to make legal, " the BBC reported ahead of his Easter sermon on the issue. " I can say the government has no mandate for these changes: they were not in any election manifesto, nor do they enjoy widespread public support, " he said. The government had planned to force its MPs to vote in favour of the new bill at its reading in parliament this month. But by Saturday, the Daily Telegraph was reporting that the prime minister faced a Cabinet revolt. Three Catholic ministers, Des Brown, the defence secretary, Paul Murphy, the Welsh secretary and Ruth Kelly, the transport secretary, were reported to be pushing to vote against part of the bill. Meanwhile other religious leaders were joining the attack. The Archbishop of Cardiff, Peter Smith, condemned the proposals as " gross interference in human life, " the Telegraph reported. And the leader of the Catholic Church in England, Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor, urged Catholics to write to their MPs to demand free voters. " The government is facing a resignation from the cabinet if Gordon Brown refuses to allow Labour ministers to vote against contentious proposals to allow medical research on human–animal embryos " , reported the Guardian. " It is difficult to imagine a single piece of legislation which more comprehensively attacks the sanctity and dignity of human life than News focus this particular bill, " said O'Brian, in the Guardian. But in the face of the Easter religious onslaught, researchers were also raising their profile. By Monday, the Independent's front page …

Nuclear Architecture and Epigenetics of Lineage Choice
Differentiation is an epigenetic process which is installed by changes of transcriptional programs over successive cellular divisions. A number of studies have reported the effects of biochemical modifications of chromatin (DNA and chromatin proteins) on the regulation of transcription. Although, these studies are able to explain how transcription of a given gene is regulated (toward activation...
متن کاملFormation of the embryonic-abembryonic axis of the mouse blastocyst: relationships between orientation of early cleavage divisions and pattern of symmetric/asymmetric divisions.
Setting aside pluripotent cells that give rise to the future body is a central cell fate decision in mammalian development. It requires that some blastomeres divide asymmetrically to direct cells to the inside of the embryo. Despite its importance, it is unknown whether the decision to divide symmetrically versus asymmetrically shows any spatial or temporal pattern, whether it is lineage-depend...
متن کاملEvidence for equal size cell divisions during gametogenesis in a marine green alga Monostroma angicava
In cell divisions, relative size of daughter cells should play fundamental roles in gametogenesis and embryogenesis. Differences in gamete size between the two mating types underlie sexual selection. Size of daughter cells is a key factor to regulate cell divisions during cleavage. In cleavage, the form of cell divisions (equal/unequal in size) determines the developmental fate of each blastome...
متن کاملThe APC/C inhibitor XErp1/Emi2 is essential for Xenopus early embryonic divisions.
Mitotic divisions result from the oscillating activity of cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (Cdk1). Cdk1 activity is terminated by the anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C), a ubiquitin ligase that targets cyclin B for destruction. In somatic divisions, the early mitotic inhibitor 1 (Emi1) and the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) regulate cell cycle progression by inhibiting the APC/C. Early em...
متن کاملDelays in anaphase initiation occur in individual nuclei of the syncytial Drosophila embryo.
The syncytial divisions of the Drosophila melanogaster embryo lack some of the well established cell-cycle checkpoints. It has been suggested that without these checkpoints the divisions would display a reduced fidelity. To test this idea, we examined division error frequencies in individuals bearing an abnormally long and rearranged second chromosome, designated C(2)EN. Relative to a normal ch...
متن کاملOriented cell divisions in the extending germband of Drosophila.
Tissue elongation is a general feature of morphogenesis. One example is the extension of the germband, which occurs during early embryogenesis in Drosophila. In the anterior part of the embryo, elongation follows from a process of cell intercalation. In this study, we follow cell behaviour at the posterior of the extending germband. We find that, in this region, cell divisions are mostly orient...
