Thermospheric vorticity at high geomagnetic latitudes from CHAMP data and its IMF dependence

چکیده
Neutral thermospheric wind pattern at high latitudes obtained from cross-track acceleration measurements of the CHAMP satellite above both polar regions are used to deduce statistical neutral wind vorticity distributions and were analyzed in their dependence on the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF). The average pattern confirms the large duskside anticyclonic vortex seen in the average wind pattern and reveals a cyclonic vorticity on the dawnside, which is almost equal in magnitude to the duskside minimum. The outer shape of the vorticity pattern agrees approximately with the outer boundary of region-1 currents in the well-known average current distributions of Iijima and Potemra (1976). The IMF dependence of the vorticity pattern resembles the characteristic FAC and ionospheric plasma drift pattern known from various statistical studies obtained under the same sorting conditions.

Effects of magnetospheric lobe cell convection on dayside upper thermospheric winds at high latitudes
This paper investigates a possible physical mechanism of the observed dayside high-latitude upper thermospheric wind using numerical simulations from the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere (CMIT) model. Results show that the CMIT model is capable of reproducing the unexpected afternoon equatorward winds in the upper thermosphere observed by the High altitude Interferometer WIND obser...
متن کاملModeling the Solar Cycle Dependence of Quiet-time Ion Upwelling at High Geomagnetic Latitudes
In this letter, we summarize initial results showing how solar cycle variations of the thermosphere modify the composition and intensity of ion upflows at high geomagnetic latitudes. Using an improved version of the one-dimensional hydrodynamic polar wind model developed by Gombosi et al. (1985), we obtain H + and O + vertical flow profiles using different thermospheric states corresponding to ...
متن کاملAverage thermospheric wind patterns over the polar regions, as observed by CHAMP
Measurements of the CHAMP accelerometer are utilized to investigate the average thermospheric wind distribution in the polar regions at altitudes around 400 km. This study puts special emphasis on the seasonal differences in the wind patterns. For this purpose 131 days centered on the June solstice of 2003 are considered. Within that period CHAMP’s orbit is precessing once through all local tim...
متن کاملClimatology of GPS phase scintillation at northern high latitudes for the period from 2008 to 2013
Global positioning system scintillation and total electron content (TEC) data have been collected by ten specialized GPS Ionospheric Scintillation and TEC Monitors (GISTMs) of the Canadian High Arctic Ionospheric Network (CHAIN). The phase scintillation index σ8 is obtained from the phase of the L1 signal sampled at 50 Hz. Maps of phase scintillation occurrence as a function of the altitude-adj...
متن کاملThermospheric mass density variations during geomagnetic storms and a prediction model based on the merging electric field
With the help of four years (2002–2005) of CHAMP accelerometer data we have investigated the dependence of low and mid latitude thermospheric density on the merging electric field, Em, during major magnetic storms. Altogether 30 intensive storm events (Dstmin <−100 nT) are chosen for a statistical study. In order to achieve a good correlation Em is preconditioned. Contrary to general opinion, E...
