چکیده

Sensors with long lifetimes create new applications in medical, infrastructure and environmental monitoring. Due to volume constraints, sensor systems are often capable of storing only small amounts of energy. Several systems have increased lifetime through VDD scaling [1][2][3]. This necessitates voltage conversion from highervoltage storage elements, such as batteries and fuel cells. Power is reduced by introducing ultra-low-power sleep modes during idle periods. Sensor lifetime can be further extended by harvesting from solar, vibrational and thermal energy. Since the availability of harvested energy is sporadic, it must be detected and stored. Harvesting sources often do not provide suitable voltage levels, so DC-DC up-conversion is required.

Ultra-low Power Communication Logic Circuits for Distributed Sensor Networks

SmartDust, a concept recently proposed by Kris Pister [1], are millimeter scale sensing and communication platforms composing a distributed sensor network that can monitor environmental conditions in both military and commercial applications (figure 1). These networks consist of hundreds to thousands of dust motes and a few interrogating transceivers. Each mote consists of multiple sensors, a p...

A modular 1mm3 die-stacked sensing platform with optical communication and multi-modal energy harvesting

Wireless sensor nodes have many compelling applications such as smart buildings, medical implants, and surveillance systems. However, existing devices are bulky, measuring >1cm3, and they are hampered by short lifetimes and fail to realize the “smart dust” vision of [1]. Smart dust requires a mm3-scale, wireless sensor node with perpetual energy harvesting. Recently two application-specific imp...

A 10 mm3 Inductive Coupling Radio for Syringe-Implantable Smart Sensor Nodes

We present a near-field radio system for a millimeter-scale wireless smart sensor node that is implantable through a 14-gauge syringe needle. The proposed system integrates a radio system on chip and a magnetic antenna on a glass substrate within a total dimension of 1 × 1 × 10 mm3. We demonstrate energy-efficient active near-field wireless communication between the millimeter-scale sensor node...

Preliminary Circuits for Smart Dust

The Smart Dust project is an attempt to create completely autonomous sensing and communication platforms in a cubic millimeter volume. With circuits currently in fabrication, we hope to create a system with a communication range of 100m, a power dissipation of 17μW, and a total volume of 80 cubic millimeters. The circuit described here consists of an optical receiver (onchip photodiode and ampl...

A Modular 1 mm3 Die-Stacked Sensing Platform With Low Power I2C Inter-Die Communication and Multi-Modal Energy Harvesting

A 1.0 mm general-purpose sensor node platform with heterogeneous multi-layer structure is proposed. The sensor platform benefits from modularity by allowing the addition/removal of IC layers. A new low power C interface is introduced for energy efficient inter-layer communication with compatibility to commercial C protocols. A self-adapting power management unit is proposed for efficient batter...
