An Application-Controlled Framework for Reliable Multicast Transport

چکیده

IP multicast has enabled a number of large-scale collaborative applications, several of which require reliability. However, no single reliable multicast (RM) transport protocol fits the requirements of all classes of applications and functions efficiently over all types of heterogeneous networks. In this paper, we propose a novel framework approach to RM protocol design that involves a generic core protocol skeleton that can be customized in different ways resulting in protocols that are optimized for specific applications. We identify three key issues that must be tackled before such a flexible architecture can be realized. First, to accomodate diverse applications, the semantics of message delivery (i.e., reliability and ordering) must not be fixed, but rather must be flexibly controllable. Second, to scale to large and dynamic groups, our multicast transport protocol framework must be robust against host failures and group membership changes. Third, in combination with a “safe” congestion control scheme, our transport framework must allow applications to manage available bandwidth optimally. In this paper, we discuss our solutions to these problems. To demonstrate the power of our flexible framework approach, we have designed and implemented a prototype of our transport protocol library, called libsrm.

Traffic characterization of transport level reliable multicasting: Comparison of epidemic and feedback controlled loss recovery

Transport level multicast protocols providing reliability and scalability properties are certainly essential building blocks for several distributed group applications. We consider the effect of reliable multicast transport mechanisms on traffic characteristics and hence network performance. Although self-similarity property of unicast traffic, in particular TCP, has been analyzed extensively, ...

FCAST: Object Delivery for the Asynchronous Layered Coding (ALC) and NACK-Oriented Reliable Multicast (NORM) Protocols

This document introduces the FCAST reliable object (e.g., file) delivery application. It is designed to operate either on top of the underlying Asynchronous Layered Coding (ALC) / Layered Coding Transport (LCT) reliable multicast transport protocol or the NACKOriented Reliable Multicast (NORM) transport protocol.

Reliable Multicast Network Transport for Distributed Virtual Simulation

This paper addresses the need for reliable multicast (RM) network support for the class of distributed virtual simulations (DVS) that operate with human participants who experience a virtual representation in real time, for example DIS and real-time HLA federations. The need for RM in DVS is explained. The state of reliable multicast networking is explained and typical mechanisms for providing ...

Cooperative control of multicast-based streaming on-demand systems

This paper proposes the COoperative COntrol Protocol (COCOP), which enables a synchronous cooperative group to interactively control an on-demand server which multicasts time-dependent data streams. Multicast-based streaming on-demand systems such as video on-demand systems, web casters, and networks of real/virtual sensors can beneficially exploit COCOP to provide cooperative control sessions ...

Reliable adaptive lightweight multicast protocol

Typical applications of mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) require group-oriented services. Digital battlefields and disaster relief operations make data dissemination and teleconferences a key application domain. Network-supported multicast is hence critical for efficient any-to-many communications. However, very little work has been done on “reliable” transport multicast. We propose and evaluate ...
