چکیده

– We report the results of an experimental investigation of segregation in a binary mixture of dry particles subjected to horizontal oscillatory excitation. The thin layer of particles was driven by the stick-slip frictional interaction with the surface of a horizontal tray. As the packing fraction of the mixture was increased, the evolution of distinct phases was observed. We identified them as a binary gas, segregation liquid and segregation crystal and provide both microscopic and macroscopic measures to identify their properties. Finally, we draw some analogies between segregation in our granular system and self-assembly in binary

Modeling the Solubility of Acid Gases in Ionic Liquids

In this work, the PC-SAFT equation of state (EoS) has been used to model the solubility of acid gases (CO2 and H2S) in two imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) ([C8-mim][PF6] and [C8-mim][Tf2N]). Parameters of pure ILs were estimated using experimental densities. Two strategies were considered to model densities of pure ILs. In strategy 1, ILs were modeled as nonassociating compounds and in st...

MICROSCOPIC REARRANGEMENTS WITHIN GRANULAR SHEAR FLOWS : SEGREGATION , SUBDIFFUSION , & ROTATION by Matthew

Title of dissertation: MICROSCOPIC REARRANGEMENTS WITHIN GRANULAR SHEAR FLOWS: SEGREGATION, SUBDIFFUSION, & ROTATION Matthew John Harrington Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Professor Wolfgang Losert Department of Physics Granular materials constitute a class of complex systems that can exhibit global behaviors that are reminiscent of solids, liquids, gases, or otherwise uni...

Discrete Particle Simulation of Granular Flow

Granular materials, which can be either wet or dry and range from nanometers to centimetres in size, are widely encountered in industries and in nature. As with solids, they can withstand deformation and form heaps; as with liquids, they can flow; as with gases, they exhibit compressibility. These features give rise to another state of matter that is poorly understood (Ennis et al., 1994; Jaege...

M ar 2 00 1 The equation of state for almost elastic , smooth , polydisperse granular gases for arbitrary density

Simulation results of dense granular gases with particles of different size are compared with theoretical predictions concerning the pair-correlation functions, the collison rate, the energy dissipation, and the mixture pressure. The effective particle-particle correlation function, which enters the equation of state in the same way as the correlation function of monodisperse granular gases, de...

Quantifying non-ergodic dynamics of force-free granular gases.

Brownian motion is ergodic in the Boltzmann-Khinchin sense that long time averages of physical observables such as the mean squared displacement provide the same information as the corresponding ensemble average, even at out-of-equilibrium conditions. This property is the fundamental prerequisite for single particle tracking and its analysis in simple liquids. We study analytically and by event...
