Hash functions: Theory, attacks, and applications
نویسنده
چکیده
Hash functions, most notably MD5 and SHA-1, initially crafted for use in a handful of cryptographic schemes with specific security requirements, have become standard fare for many developers and protocol designers who treat them as black boxes with magic properties. This strategy had paid off until 2004—both functions appeared to have withstood the test of time and intense scrutiny of cryptanalysts. Starting last year, we have seen an explosion in the number and power of attacks on the standard hash functions. In this note we discuss the extent to which the hash functions can be thought of as black boxes, review some recent attacks, and, most importantly, revisit common applications of hash functions in programming practice.

متن کاملCryptographic Hash Functions: Cryptanalysis, Design and Applications
Cryptographic hash functions are an important tool in cryptography to achieve certain security goals such as authenticity, digital signatures, digital time stamping, and entity authentication. They are also strongly related to other important cryptographic tools such as block ciphers and pseudorandom functions. The standard and widely used hash functions such as MD5 and SHA-1 follow the design ...
متن کاملCryptographic Hash Functions: A Survey
This paper gives a survey on cryptographic hash functions. It gives an overview of all types of hash functions and reviews design principals and possible methods of attacks. It also focuses on keyed hash functions and provides the applications, requirements, and constructions of keyed hash functions.
متن کاملSecure Robust Hash Functions and Their Applications in Non-interactive Communications
A robust hash function allows different parties to extract a consistent key from a common fuzzy source, e.g., an image gone through noisy channels, which can then be used to establish a cryptographic session key among the parties without the need for interactions. These functions are useful in various communication scenarios, where the security notions are different. The authors study these dif...
متن کاملOn the Influence of the Algebraic Degree of F-1 on the Algebraic Degree of G ∘ F
We present a study on the algebraic degree of iterated permutations seen as multivariate polynomials. The main result shows that this degree depends on the algebraic degree of the inverse of the permutation which is iterated. This result is also extended to non-injective balanced vectorial functions where the relevant quantity is the minimal degree of the inverse of a permutation expanding the ...
