Greenland outlet glacier ice - flow variability

چکیده
1 I ce mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet is a primary contributor to global sea level rise. The rate of ice loss has accelerated over the last couple of decades and Greenland currently contributes about 0.7-1.1 mm/yr to sea-level rise (260-380 Gt/ice per year; Enderlin et al. 2014; Shepherd et al. 2012). Predicting the potential rate and limits of future mass loss requires a clear understanding of ice sheet dynamics and how the ice sheet is coupled to the climate system. Roughly a third to a half of Greenland ice loss is due to discharge through iceberg calving at the ice-ocean interface, as opposed to in situ surface melt (Enderlin et al. 2014; Shepherd et al. 2012). Glacier velocity, as well as ice thickness, terminus advance and retreat, and the mechanisms controlling their variability, must be understood to calculate and predict ice sheet discharge. Characterization and understanding of ice sheet velocity contributes both to exploring the processes controlling ice dynamics and to constraining ice sheet models used to predict future mass loss and associated sea-level rise.

21st-century evolution of Greenland outlet glacier velocities.
Earlier observations on several of Greenland's outlet glaciers, starting near the turn of the 21st century, indicated rapid (annual-scale) and large (>100%) increases in glacier velocity. Combining data from several satellites, we produce a decade-long (2000 to 2010) record documenting the ongoing velocity evolution of nearly all (200+) of Greenland's major outlet glaciers, revealing complex sp...
متن کاملSubmarine melt rate estimates for floating termini of Greenland outlet glaciers (2000–2010)
The rate of mass loss from the Greenland ice sheet has increased over the past decade due, in large part, to changes in marine-terminating outlet glacier dynamics. These changes are attributed to increased submarine melt rates of floating ice tongues and submerged calving faces resulting from increased coastal ocean heat transport. We use remotely sensed data to calculate submarine melt rates f...
متن کاملInfluence of sea ice decline, atmospheric warming, and glacier width on marine-terminating outlet glacier behavior in northwest Greenland at seasonal to interannual timescales
Discharge from marine-terminating outlet glaciers represents a key component of the Greenland Ice Sheet mass budget and observations suggest that mass loss from northwest Greenland has recently accelerated. Despite this, the factors controlling outlet glacier dynamics within this region have been comparatively poorly studied. Here we use remotely sensed data to investigate the influence of atmo...
متن کاملGreenland flow variability from ice-sheet-wide velocity mapping
Using RADARSAT synthetic aperture radar data, we have mapped the flow velocity over much of the Greenland ice sheet for the winters of 2000/01 and 2005/06. These maps provide a detailed view of the ice-sheet flow, including that of the hundreds of glaciers draining the interior. The focused patterns of flow at the coast suggest a strong influence of bedrock topography. Differences between our t...
متن کاملA Review of Recent Changes in Major Marine-Terminating Outlet Glaciers in Northern Greenland
Over the past two decades, mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) has accelerated and contributed to global sea level rise. This has been partly attributed to dynamic changes in marine terminating outlet glaciers. Outlet glaciers at the northern margin of the ice sheet drain 40% of its area but are comparatively less well-studied than elsewhere on the ice sheet (e.g., central-west or sou...
