Dating of H II Regions from Ionization Modeling

چکیده

The emission-line spectrum of an H II region essentially reflects the shape of the EUV spectral energy distribution of the OB stars that ionize the gas. In principle one can use this spectrum to extract information about the age of the underlying association. In practice, a number of effects can lead to systematic errors in derived ages. The star-gas geometry is an important consideration, as it determines the ionization parameter; high-spatial-resolution imaging is thus essential to constrain the geometry. Dust grains absorb ionizing photons and decrease the Balmer equivalent widths and derived Lyman-continuum luminosity; differential extinction between stars and gas can also affect equivalent widths. Starburst synthesis models appear to over-predict the numbers of very hot Wolf-Rayet stars, especially for metal-rich starbursts; this can have deleterious effects on the modeling for such objects.

Initial Ionization of Compressible Turbulence

We study the effects of the initial conditions of turbulent molecular clouds on the ionization structure in newly formed H ii regions, using three-dimensional, photon-conserving radiative transfer in a precomputed density field from three-dimensional compressible turbulence. Our results show that the initial density structure of the gas cloud can play an important role in the resulting structur...

Combined stellar structure and atmosphere models for massive stars IV. The impact on the ionization structure of single star H II regions

We study the impact of modern stellar atmospheres that take into account the effects of stellar winds, departures from LTE and line blanketing (“CoStar” models) on the ionization structure of H ii regions. Results from a large grid of photoionization models are presented. Due to a flatter energy distribution in the He i continuum, compared to the widely used Kurucz models, generally higher ioni...

Modeling the Warm Ionized Interstellar Medium and Its Impact on Elemental Abundance Studies

We present model calculations of ionization fractions for elements in the warm (T ∼ 10 K), low-density photoionized interstellar medium (WIM) of the Milky Way. We model the WIM as a combination of overlapping low-excitation H II regions having n(H)/n(H) ∼> 0.8. Our adopted standard model incorporates an intrinsic elemental abundance pattern similar to that found for warm neutral clouds in the G...

Fixed Bed Column Modeling of Cd(II) Adsorption on Bone Char Using Backward Bayesian Multiple Linear Regression

In this work, the backward Bayesian multiple linear regression (BBMLR) as a new approach is presented to predict the adsorption efficiency (AE) of Cd(II) ions by ostrich bone char (OBC) in the fixed bed adsorption with four operational variables consisting of pH (2-9), inlet Cd(II) concentration (Co= 25-100 mg/L), bed depth (h= 3-9 cm) and feed flow rate (Q= 0.5-30 mL/min). The performance of t...
