Bending of Light by Gravity Waves

چکیده
We describe the statistical properties of light rays propagating though a random sea of gravity waves and compare with the case for scalar metric perturbations from density inhomogeneities. For scalar fluctuations the deflection angle grows as the square-root of the path length D in the manner of a random walk, and the rms displacement of a ray from the unperturbed trajectory grows as D. For gravity waves the situation is very different. The mean square deflection angle remains finite and is dominated by the effect of the metric fluctuations at the ends of the ray, and the mean square displacement grows only as the logarithm of the path length. In terms of power spectra, the displacement for scalar perturbations has P (k) ∝ 1/k while for gravity waves the trajectories of photons have P (k) ∝ 1/k which is a scale-invariant or ‘flicker-noise’ process, and departures from rectilinear motion are suppressed, relative to the scalar case, by a factor ∼ (λ/D) where λ is the characteristic scale of the metric fluctuations and D is the path length. This result casts doubt on the viability of some recent proposals for detecting or constraining the gravity wave background by astronomical measurements. Modelling of Love Waves in Fluid Saturated Porous Viscoelastic Medium resting over an Exponentially Graded Inhomogeneous Half-space Influenced by Gravity
The present article is devoted to a theoretical study on Love wave vibration in a pre-stressed fluid-saturated anisotropic porous viscoelastic medium embedded over an inhomogeneous isotropic half-space influenced by gravity. The expression of dispersion has been achieved with the help of mathematical tools such as variable separable method and Whittaker’s function’s expansion under certain boun...
متن کاملTorsional Waves in Prestressed Fiber Reinforced Medium Subjected to Magnetic Field
The propagation of torsional waves in a prestressed fiber-reinforced half-space under the effect of magnetic field and gravity has been discussed. The problem has been solved analytically using Whittaker function to obtain the exact solution frequency equations. Numerical results for stress, gravity and magnetic field are given and illustrated graphically. Comparisons are made with the results ...
متن کاملThe Equivalence Principle and the bending of light
The apparent discrepancy between the bending of light predicted by the equivalence principle and its corresponding value in general relativity is resolved by evaluating the deflection of light with respect to a direction that is parallel transported along the ray trajectory in 3-space. In this way the bending predicted by the equivalence principle is fulfilled in general relativity and other al...
متن کاملSolution of propagation of acoustic-gravity waves in the atmosphere using finite difference method of order two
Investigating waves propagation’s equation in the atmosphere is one of the important and widely used issues in various sciences, which has attracted many researchers. A type of propagating waves is an acoustic-gravity wave. These type of waves have a lot of stationarity properties and can be propagate to a high altitude in the atmosphere. The equation of acoustic-gravity wave propagation is a h...

It has been proved that ultrasonic energy can considerably increase the amount of oil recovery in an immiscible displacement process. Although many studies have been performed on investigating the roles of ultrasonic waves, based on the best of our knowledge, little attention has been paid to evaluate wave attenuation parameter, which is an important parameter in the determination of the energy...
