چکیده

This document presents Shortest Queue First (SQF) packet scheduling algorithm, as a solution to improve Internet access on ADSL links. This queuing policy provides implicit service differentiation, avoiding the need of packet marking and resource reservation associated to usual Quality of Service (QoS) architectures like Differentiated Services (DiffServ) and Integrated Services (IntServ). SQF is compared with two existing alternative disciplines, First In First Out (FIFO) and Stochastic Fairness Queuing (SFQ), and several experiments are performed in order to underline aspects of each algorithm in different scenarios. Some of the most significant results are presented here to help understand advantages and drawbacks of each scheduler and how they behave in these different situations. Results show that SQF fully meets its design goals, outperforming both FIFO and SFQ in all the tests. Effectiveness of the algorithm is also evaluated in a demo. Real-world programs are used in some common home scenarios: everyday usage situations are reproduced adopting different schedulers in order to highlight the difference in quality of service perceived by users. This provides a definitive proof of high performances given by SQF algorithm, making it the best candidate solution for QoS on ADSL Internet access.

A Novel Fuzzy Logic Base Scheduling Mechanism for Service Differentiation in IP Networks

Quality of Service (QoS) refers to a set of rules or techniques that help the network administrators use the available network resources optimally to manage the effects of congestion and to treat the applications according to their needs. The differentiated services architecture (DiffServ) allows providing quality of service to users. The major DiffServ premise is that individual flows with sim...

Fair bandwidth sharing and delay differentiation: Joint packet scheduling with buffer management

Packet delay and bandwidth are two important metrics for measuring quality of service (QoS) of Internet services. Traditionally, packet delay differentiation and fair bandwidth sharing are studied separately. In this paper, we first propose a generalized model for providing fair bandwidth sharing with delay differentiation, namely FBS-DD, at the same time. It essentially aims to provide multi-d...

Enhancing Coverage Extension with Service Differentiation in Wireless Networks

Coverage Extension is an important consideration for enhancing the network connectivity without changes in the infrastructure. So, in the existing system in order to enlarge the network coverage in wireless networks, an incentive and a scheduling algorithm are presented. Also considers the impacts in the quality-of-service whenever increasing the coverage. So, the cross-layer approach is used t...

JoBS: Joint Buffer Management and Scheduling for Differentiated Services

A novel algorithm, called JoBS (Joint Buffer Management and Scheduling), is presented for loss and delay differentiation of traffic classes in a packet network. JoBS has two unique capabilities: (1) JoBS makes scheduling and buffer management decisions in a single step, and (2) JoBS supports both relative and absolute QoS requirements of classes. The JoBS algorithm is presented in terms of the ...

Bgp+: a Packet Scheduling Algorithm for Proportional Delay Differentiation Services

Proportional service differentiation models are simple and effective approaches to service differentiation in Internet. Schedulers for delay differentiation are important elements of these models. We describe a new scheduler for proportional delay differentiation called BPR+: Optimized BacklogProportional Rate scheduler. BPR considers waiting times of packets that are backlogged in queues in or...
