Enzymatic dehalogenation of certain brominated and chlorinated compounds.

چکیده

The dehalogenation in vivo of brominated aliphatic hydrocarbons such as methyl bromide (1) and bromochloromethane (2) has been demonstrated by recovery of inorganic bromide from blood and urine. The intracellular formation of bromide and methyl alcohol from methyl bromide has been advanced as an explanation for its prolonged toxic effect (3). Evidence for the splitting of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons has not been obtained. Thus, methyl alcohol could not be detected in the blood of animals exposed to methyl chloride (4). In the present investigation it was found that protein fractions from liver catalyzed the hydrolysis of bromochloromethane (CH2BrC1), dibromomethane, and dichloromethane to hydrogen ion, halide ion, and formaldehyde. The enzyme system was activated by cyanide and sulfhydryl compounds.
