First Results of the Lcls Laser-heater System*

چکیده
The very bright electron beam required for an x-ray freeelectron laser (FEL), such as the LCLS, is susceptible to a microbunching instability in the magnetic bunch compressors, prior to the FEL undulator. The uncorrelated electron energy spread in the LCLS can be increased by an order of magnitude to provide strong Landau damping against the instability without degrading the FEL performance. To this end, a ‘laser-heater’ system has been installed in the LCLS injector, which modulates the energy of a 135-MeV electron bunch with an IR laser beam in a short undulator, enclosed within a four-dipole chicane. The last half of the chicane time-smears the energy modulation leaving an effective thermal energy spread increase. We present the first commissioning results of this system, its operational issues, its impact on the microbunching instability, and finally its effect on the FEL performance.

متن کاملTemporal profile of the LCLS photocathode ultraviolet drive laser tolerated by the microbunching instability ∗
The high quality LCLS electron beam generated in the photoinjector is subject to many instabilities in the downstream acceleration and compression. The instability can be initiated by any density modulation of the electron beam generated at the photocathode. In this paper, we prescribe the tolerance on the initial electron beam density modulation possibly introduced by the ultraviolet (uv) lase...
متن کاملConventional and Advanced Exergetic and Exergoeconomic Analysis Applied to an Air Preheater System for Fired Heater (Case Study: Tehran Oil Refinery Company)
TThe present paper evaluates the plan of combustion air pre-heater installation on the fired heater from thermodynamics and thermos-economics point of view. As a real case study, one of the fired heaters (H_101) of Distillation unit in Tehran Oil Refinery, Iran, is intended. With applying an air pre-heater in this study, flue gases temperature falls down from 430 ºC to 200ºCand combustion a...
متن کاملUV laser pulse temporal profile requirements for the LCLS injector - Part I - Fourier Transform limit for a temporal zero slope flattop
The temporal profile of the uv drive laser pulse for the LCLS injector is specified by the duration, the rise/fall time, and the maximum rms amplitude (for all frequencies) of residual modulation in the plateau region. The bandwidth of the uv laser system should accommodate pulses with a rise/fall time as low as 0.7 ps and an rms residual amplitude modulation (on the plateau) below 0.5% in the ...
متن کاملLinac Coherent Light Source Undulator Rf Bpm System *
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) will be the world's first x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) when it becomes operational in 2009. The LCLS is currently in the construction phase. The beam position monitor (BPM) system planned for the LCLS undulator will incorporate a high-resolution X-band cavity BPM system described in this paper. The BPM system will provide high-resolution measurements of...
