BEHAV. 28(I) 63--66, 1982.---Contrary to recent evidence, further data showing that intracranial self-stimulation behaviour in the pigeon is frequently hunger-dependent is reported. A compilation of reinforcing brain loci in the pigeon suggests an association with two dopaminergic systems, the paleostriatal complex and the nucleus basalis system, the latter being known to be involved in the control of feeding.

Motivation dependence of brain self-stimulation in the pigeon.
Several brain sites in the pigeon were identified as maintaining electrical brain self-stimulation. Depending on the site, stimulus currents yielding maximal responding varied from 20 to 160 μA. A high proportion of the sites only yielded self-stimulation behaviour if the subjects were deprived of food; when the birds were at full weight there was only one site at which the stimulation continue...
متن کاملEffect of Electrical Stimulation and Lesion of Nucleus Accumbens on EEG of Intact and Addicted Rats
Introduction: The nucleus accumbens is involved in various functions ranging from motivation and reward to feeding and drug addiction. Some researchers have also suggested that this region has some roles in consciousness. In the present study, the effect of electrical stimulation and lesion of nucleus accumbens on Electroencephalogram waves (EEG) of addict and non-addict rats was investigated. ...
متن کاملControl of epileptic seizures by electrical low frequency deep brain stimulation: A review of probable mechanisms
Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease with no definitive method in treatment. Notably, the main way to treat and control epileptic seizures is drug therapy. However, about 20-30% of patients with epilepsy are drug resistant and require other therapeutic manners. Deep brain stimulation is a new therapeutic strategy for these patients. Conspicuously, there are no clear answers for basi...
متن کاملThe effects of locus coeruleus electrical stimulation on brain waves of morphine dependent rats
Introduction: Opiates cause dependency via affect on central nervous system. Locus coeruleus nucleus is a main group of noradrenergic neurons in the brain that plays an important role in the expression of opioid withdrawal signs. During opioid withdrawal, brain waves change in addition to physical and behavioral signs. In this study, we examined the effects of locus coeruleus electrical sti...
متن کاملThe Effect of Unilateral and Bilateral Electrical Stimulation of the Brain on Improving Balance in the Elderly
Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of unilateral and bilateral electrical stimulation of the brain on balance in elderly. Materials and methods: Thirty-six elderly in Ilam city participated in study. In the pre-test, static balance was taken and then the participants were randomly divided into three groups: unilateral brain stimulation, bilateral brain stimulatio...
